Title:  GTW 5836
Description:  CN local, with 1 TPPX woodchip gondola in tow, has just arrived to service Expera Specialty Solutions via former C&NW rails at Kaukauna, WI on 27 Dec. '16. The mill's Rail King Model RK330 G4 has also arrived and the 2 crews will confer about the pending movements. From its founding in 1883 until 26 Jun. '13, this Kaukauna mill was Thilmany Pulp and Paper Co. (a.k.a. Thilmany, LLC or Thilmany Papers). The 4 TPPX pulpwood gondolas to the left are spotted there to be loaded with pulpwood to be shipped somewhere else, an unusual process which seems to have started earlier in the year.

Title:  GTW 5836
Description:  CN local passes the former C&NW depot after servicing Expera Specialty Solutions at Kaukauna, WI on 27 Dec. '16. The depot was built in 1947 at the intersection of Depot St. and Draper St. to replace the old, wooden depot. Designed in the Art Moderne style, it originally had flat roofs. The current gabled roofs were added at some point after 1983. It became known as the north side depot after 1890, when the MLS&W, later C&NW, built their large, ornate depot south of the Fox River. That depot disappeared many years ago.

Title:  CN 7027 and GTW 5836
Description:  CN local crosses a frozen Mud Creek via the former C&NW bridge at Fox Crossing, WI (formerly Town of Menasha, WI until 14 Apr. '16) on 1 Jan. '17. The train was probably going to work Appleton, Little Chute, and Kaukauna and had two locomotives CN 7027 and GTW 5836. The bridge was built by Wisconsin Bridge & Iron Co., North Milwaukee, WI, in 1923. Some of the timber bents for the former SOO bridge (also still in use by CN) are visible in the background.

CN 9433 and GTW 5836
Title:  CN 9433 and GTW 5836
Description:  CN local parallels N. Lake St. and passes the ongoing reconstruction of the Hwy. 41/Hwy. 10/Hwy. 441 (a.k.a. Tri-County Expressway) interchange (a.k.a. the Polish Connection) as it heads northeast via former C&NW rails at Stroebe, WI on 23 Dec. '17. Stroebe is a railroad station in Fox Crossing, WI (formerly Town of Menasha, Winnebago Co., WI until 14 Apr. '16 (not Outagamie Co., where Stroebe was erroneously placed on this site)). The interchange opened to traffic on 30 Nov. '75. When Hwy. 10 was reconstructed and relocated ca. '97, this interchange was not simultaneously reconstructed to form a full interchange, but the ongoing, extensive expansion and reconstruction will make it a full interchange as well as increase traffic capacity. Train was headed for Appleton, Little Chute, and Kaukauna.

Description:  A CN local crosses the W. Lawrence St. grade crossing and passes the recently closed S. Locust St. grade crossing as it heads northeast via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI on 29 Dec. '17. Train was headed for Little Chute and Kaukauna. The S. Locust St. grade crossing was closed as part of Appleton's quest for so-called quiet zone status. The "Do Not Enter" signs (there is one on the far side of the tracks as well) were put up in an attempt to discourage distracted drivers from trying to drive down the railroad tracks.

Title:  GTW 5836
Description:  A CN local parallels E. Eagle Flats Pkwy. (originally Railroad Ave.) as it pulls 4 boxcars westward through 'The Flats' via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI on 20 Oct. '18. Train was heading back to the yard at Appleton Junction after working Kimberly and Combined Locks. The locomotive is passing what once was the east end of the C&NW yard in 'The Flats.' The last remnant of the yard, a passing siding, was pulled up in 2014. The MILW had a small yard just out of frame to the right. Railroad Ave. was renamed E. Eagle Flats Pkwy. ca. 2012, when bland apartment buildings, Landing at Eagle Flats and Riverwalk Place, were erected on the site of the historic Riverside Paper mill (out-of-frame to the right). Over the past several years, I have noticed that some misinformed individuals erroneously refer to ‘The Flats’ as ‘Oneida Flats,’ or some variation of same. However, the historic, industrial heart of Appleton is simply ‘The Flats.’

Train was heading back to the yard at Appleton Junction after working Kimberly and Combined Locks. The local is passing what once was the C&NW yard in 'The Flats.' The last remnant of the yard, a passing siding, was pulled up in 2014. The long ties at left mark the spot of the west turnout. The MILW had a small yard, and depot, just out of frame to the right. Railroad Ave. was renamed E. Eagle Flats Pkwy. ca. 2012, when bland apartment buildings, Landing at Eagle Flats and Riverwalk Place, were erected on the site of the historic Riverside Paper mill (out-of-frame to the right). JWM Coenen Mechanical (current occupant of the old Allis-Chalmers, originally Valley Iron Works, facility), 401 E. South Island St., dominates the scene. The outline of the letters that once spelled Allis-Chalmers can still be seen at the upper left of this (west) facade. The nearest, and probably oldest, portion of the facility spanned the South Channel of the Fox River when it was built at some point between 1911 and 1955. South Island St. (just out-of-frame to the left) used to run parallel to the north bank of the South Channel. Old maps reveal that the west end of the South Channel (behind me to the left) was filled in at some point between 1916 and 1957. Most of the remainder of the South Channel was gradually filled in the following years. The only remaining portion forms the confluence with a mill race which connects West’s Power Canal (a.k.a. West’s Canal, a.k.a. Grand Chute Island Canal) to the Fox River at the east end of this substantial facility. Edward West bought Grand Chute Island and excavated the canal in 1870 to provide water power for the industries which he speculated would be built soon after. He was right. For much of its history, this facility fabricated paper machines. The current occupant supports the paper industry, and other customers. Over the past several years, I have noticed that some misinformed individuals erroneously refer to ‘The Flats’ as ‘Oneida Flats,’ or some variation of same. However, the historic, industrial heart of Appleton is simply ‘The Flats.’

Woolen Mills Lofts, 218 E. South Island St., can be seen at left. The Appleton Woolen Factory commenced production of yarn at its new factory on Grand Chute Island along West’s Power Canal in Jan. 1862. It burned down in Jul. ‘63, production resumed in Apr. ‘64 after it was rebuilt. It was destroyed by fire again on 17 Jun. ‘81 and construction of a new, masonry structure (the heart of the current facility) commenced immediately. The company was reorganized as Appleton Woolen Mills during the reconstruction. They added mackinaws and flannels to their list of products in ‘88. In ‘03 production at this facility shifted solely to papermakers’ felt after production of their other woolen products was moved to a recently acquired mill at Reedsburg, WI. Numerous additions were constructed between ‘93 and 1962. The name was shortened to Appleton Mills in ‘61. They moved to a new facility at 2100 N. Ballard Rd. in ‘69. Conversion of this factory to apartments commenced ca. 2016 and a ribbon cutting ceremony was held on 26 Apr. ‘18. Over the past several years, I have noticed that some misinformed individuals erroneously refer to ‘The Flats’ as ‘Oneida Flats,’ or some variation of same. However, the historic, industrial heart of Appleton is simply ‘The Flats.’

IC 9601 and GTW 5836
Title:  IC 9601 and GTW 5836
Description:  A CN works in the former SOO yard as it prepares to shove a quartet of covered hoppers to Intertape Polymer Group (IPG), 741 4th St., Menasha, WI, on 1 Apr. '20. IPG was founded in Menasha in Dec. 1917 as George Banta Paper Co., an affiliate of the George Banta Publishing Co. The name was changed to Central Paper Products Co. (later shortened to Central Paper Co.) ca. Sep. ’20. The facility was acquired by Alco Standard Corp. ca. 29 Sep. ’69, but continued to operate as Central Paper (the name changed to Central Products Co. at some point after ’74). Spinnaker Industries, Inc., purchased it ca. 1 Jul. ‘95. Intertape Polymer Group, Inc., purchased it ca. 12 Apr. ’99.

Description:  A CN local passes Arrowhead Park as it pulls up to clear the north leg of the wye so it can back onto the east leg of the wye at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 24 Apr. '20. The P. H. Glatfelter Co. paper mill was the backdrop for this scene for 135 years, the oldest part of the original mill was constructed in 1874. Glatfelter purchased the mill from Bergstrom Paper Co. in 1979. Bergstrom had purchased the mill, originally Winnebago Paper, in 1904. Glatfelter moved the jobs to Ohio in June 2006, the mill stood idle for about two years until it was torn down, demolition was completed in May 2009. I was standing where the paper mill's water treatment facility had been. The corporate headquarters of Plexus, 1 Plexus Way (at left), and an Ascension clinic (originally Affinity) at 101 Main St. (at right) occupy most of the site of the old paper mill. Some people think these new buildings look nice, I think they look like crap. I abhor modern, so-called, architecture. Neenah's newest, modern eyesore, the Gateway office building (also used by Plexus), is partially visible in the background, to the left of the Ascension clinic. After razing some more cool, old buildings, construction commenced on 4 May '16 and was completed about a year later. Some of Neenah's other, bland, unimaginative, modern buildings loom in the background. There is no room for historic buildings or classic architecture in Future Neenah. Arrowhead Park is a closed paper sludge landfill. Before the landfill was opened in the '50s, the waves at the south shore of Little Lake Butte des Morts lapped at these tracks.
