Plenty of power
Title:  Plenty of power
Description:  Train 557 gets underway from East Binghamton with more than enough power to get its 27 COFC and 6 freight to Buffalo. Note the bridge pier being poured at the far right. The new Conklin Av overpass is being built to replace the ancient steel bridge the train is passing under. The new overpass will have a much more gentle S curve, to the relief of many motorists. This location is known locally as Holmes Crossing.

Always good to see an Alco
Title:  Always good to see an Alco
Description:  Even if its trailing. A C424 is in second place today, but will be leading tomorrows 557 west. It is about to pass under NY 17C in west Endicott. C424's were not uncommon on the 557/558 trains, but mostly it got an SD40/GP9 combination. Six axle MLW's were more commonly seen on the D&H going north, though they did appear on the Tier from time to time.

558 past the detector
Title:  558 past the detector
Description:  Train 558 passes the site of the hot box detector on its last lap into Binghamton. The EL had a hot box detector here on track 1; the cabin in the foreground housed the equipment. When it had a hit, it would set the next westbound automatic signal yellow, and the one after that red.

Alcos galore
Title:  Alcos galore
Description:  Train 522 rolls 96 cars past the signals at Tioga Center with a pair of SDs bracketing three MLW units, including an M636. Alco design units were common on the D&H proper, but were not seen nearly as often on the Tier.
