Album Info:I helped start FNW in 1999, and served as the shortline's VP until 2005. FNW ran 1999-2002, when infighting with the owner of the RR track (Nebraska Railway Museum) cost us the track lease. We were asked back a year later, but by that time Union Pacific had red-boarded the interchange track. Combined with bad luck and indifference from the Fremont business community, FNW never managed to get running again. The track owner, Nebraska Rwy Museum, went under in 2009 and sold the track to a shortline operator. As of now, the new operator has not run the line, and the end may be near. During its time, FNW poured major bucks back into the museum's equipment and track, and was a successful operation. I still can't believe FNW died for the reasons it did......

Frozen Alco
Title:  Frozen Alco
Description:  We made the long trip to Syndey to buy this RS18. At the time, a runner Alco was $20,000, and a junk EMD was $100,000. Easy math for a startup company. 3842 was the last MLW running on CBNS, and was a crew favorite. When we got there, we found they had indeed parked her running, but then left water in her in the middle of winter. The block was cracked. Long trip for not much. Poor 3842 was cut up along with the rest of their MLW fleet a year or so later. Shot taken in the CBNS shop, so this was all I could get.

WHRC 8046
Title:  WHRC 8046
Description:  Looking for More Power, we stopped at Windsor to talk to them about their RS23s, which were for sale. The line's GM told us he really didn't want to sell the units, since they really ran well. The line's owner, a holding company, was pushing for EMDs. He wanted all 8 sold in a block, and wouldn't sell single units. Couldn't afford that, so had to let them go.

Making Bank
Title:  Making Bank
Description:  140 storage hoppers are tied onto 1219, while we're sorting out cars to be returned. Flat track and empty cars is how you can move 140 cars with a SW1200.....

Starting the Alco
Title:  Starting the Alco
Description:  Another trip to Canada, this time to look at C424s on the Hudson Bay Rwy. 602 was our target, and here my business partner Maynard Porter and the head mechanic are working on starting her for the first time in a couple of months. 602 is hooked to jumper cables from the set of power on the next track. After many attempts, we figured out the low water switch was stuck, and the unit wouldn't start as a result. They guys are jumper-cabling around the lead from the switch, and 602 started right after this. UPDATE note: Maynard passed away unexpectedly Dec 6, 2015. RIP my friend, may all the Alcos run well for you in heaven.

HBRY 601
Title:  HBRY 601
Description:  We were also looking at 601 or 605 for purchase. 605 burned up its air compressor, don't remember what was wrong with 601. We made an offer for 602 and 605 with the HBRY owner Omnitrax, who rejected the offer outright. After sitting on these units for another year, all 5 were sold for less total $ than we had offered for 2 units. Things that make you go Huh?

Ones that Got Away part 1
Title:  Ones that Got Away part 1
Description:  DS4 came up for sale in 2001, replaced with an EMD switcher. The owner only wanted $5000 for her, no kidding. We told him we would hop a flight out and do the deal, but before we even could, DS4 sold to Fillmore Western in CA. Actual photo date on this picture is probably around 1992.

Ones that got way part 2
Title:  Ones that got way part 2
Description:  When BHP Arizona sold off its Alco fleet in 2002, I made the call about these two units. Yes, they were for sale, and cheap. I talked it over with the FNW board, and we decided to go for it. But, by the time I called back to AZ a couple of days later, both had been sold to Blacklands RR in Texas. Argh. Strangely, both wound up at my nearest railroad museum in OK years later, and I've since worked on #2. Small world. Shot at the Oklahoma Railway Museum in 2007.
