To the Syracuse side
Title:  To the Syracuse side
Description:  BH 1 takes the switch for the Syracuse Branch at Forks. Its 77 cars will cause some consternation for the motorists on NY 12 as it slowly clears the interlocking. I'm standing about where the south end of the old DLW station stood until 1976.

Detour train with western power
Title:  Detour train with western power
Description:  CSX detour train SU 404 approaches the Kattelville Road crossing in Chenango Bridge with a pair of BNSF units leading the usual motley assortment of NYSW power that typified that period, though it is that rarest of power consists these days, having three builders' diesels. Just a hint of fall color is still in the trees this late in October

Ya never knew what would show up
Title:  Ya never knew what would show up
Description:  NYSW moved a variety of power around, and also worked on some of it for other roads at their Utica shop. As a result sometimes some odd things would turn up. One of them was this Mohawk Adirondack & Northern Alco that was working on BH 2 at Bevier St.

Tell us how you really feel
Title:  Tell us how you really feel
Description:  The six axle ex Cartier units were something less than stunning performers, and the T&E people were not always that fond of them. Someone has expressed his thoughts in the dust on this one, seen outside the Binghamton engine house. Thats one of the ex TP&W GP 20s in the background.

Sadness or euphoria
Title:  Sadness or euphoria
Description:  NYSW had some interesting power through the years, though sometimes it was not all that attractive. When it was painted in yellowjacket, it looked sharp. There were also periods where it looked pretty sad, patch painted and mismatched. Today its sadness and not euphoria, as an ex SP tunnel motor in a multicolor patch paint job leads a pair of ex Cartier big Alcos, still mostly in their old scheme. Theres also a glimpse of F 45 3636, in yellowjacket, and definitely in a state of euphoria, as its running. This is SU 99 arriving from Jersey. The tunnel motor would soon get the yellow and black the NYSW is famous for; the Alcos would get sold to WNY&P before they ever got close to a paint booth, and 3636 would eventually become a hangar queen and go to scrap.

By the mill
Title:  By the mill
Description:  A BH 1 with a CSX standard cab C 40-8 leader gets underway for Syracuse, passing the Agway mill at the south end of Bevier St. The train has 94 cars, a lot larger than most trains on the NYSW at this time. This is more likely a detour move of CSX Q403. It had come up from Jersey over the Southern Tier Line, making the connection to the NYSW via the new switch at East BD, along Court St, then crossing the ex Erie NS line at BD to get here. It will go north on the Syracuse Branch.

Detour
Title:  Detour
Description:  CSX would sometimes hand off overflow traffic to the NYSW. These trains, SU 403 and 404 on the Suskie, were obviously not high priority, as it would sometimes take 24 hours to get them from Jersey back onto CSX at Syracuse. Here we see one of them behind a Bright Future standard cab C40 and the surviving F45, 3636, just after taking the switch to the Syracuse branch at Chenago Forks.
