Description:  Hollidaysburg. Here is a postal card entitled "Round House, Hollidaysburg, Pa." Postmarked: 21 November 1911. Prominent here is the Pennsylvania Railroad's 24-stall half-roundhouse; to the left is the power house; in the foreground are the tracks of the Westbound Classification Yard ~ note that the rails are spiked directly to the ties. Photo taken from the northwestern side, facing Loop Station. The photographer's name and the exact date are not recorded.

Description:  Hollidaysburg. Here is a photo by an unidentified photographer that was taken in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania, on 24 May 1939. Shown here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #4398, an I-1S built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works during February of 1923, rebuilt in Juniata as an I-1SA in April of 1944, and retired in 1960 after 37 years of faithful service. In this context, it's coupled behind a cabin car and will soon begin pushing a freight train up the Allegheny Mountains via the Muleshoe Curve to Gallitzin, where it will uncouple and return to East Altoona for further assignments.

Description:  Hollidaysburg. Here is a photo by Emery Gulash that was taken in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania, during May of 1954. It was published originally in Ian S. Fischer's 1997 book entitled "Pennsy Steam Years: 2," page 86. Photo Caption: "An M1b smokes up Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania, during May 1954. In November 1955, the town took on an increased significance when PRR opened their Samuel Rea Shops, the largest freight-car repair facility in the world." In this context, this locomotive is pulling a train of empty hopper cars from Enola on the Petersburg-Hollidaysburg Secondary. It will pause at Hollidaysburg for a crew change, and then climb the Allegheny Mountains via the New Portage Secondary and the Muleshoe Curve to Gallitzin and points West. The locomotive's number and the date are not recorded.

Description:  Hollidaysburg. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide by an unidentified photographer that was taken just West of Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania, perhaps in 1955. Shown here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #117, an L-1S (2-8-2) "Mikado" built in Juniata during December of 1917 and retired in October of 1959 after 42 years of faithful service. It's pulling a mixed-cargo freight train out of the Hollidaysburg Yards. It will shortly arrive at the Wye Switches ~ where it will either turn right and head toward the yards in Altoona, or head up the Allegheny Mountains via the Muleshoe Curve to Gallitzin and points West. Visible in the distance is the Blair County Court House steeple, located in the very heart of Hollidaysburg.
