Album Info:I visited the Age of Steam Roundhouse in Sugarcreek, Ohio on Saturday, April 2, 2022. I’ve been wanting to see the collection since before they started offering Roundhouse tours to the public. It’s an impressive collection / well maintained and restored. I have some past connections with several steam locomotives in the collection. I rode behind CP 1293 and CP1278 in the late 1970’s when they were up at Steamtown USA in Bellows Falls. I also rode behind CP 1278 at Gettysburg in the early 90’s. Reading 1187, now at Age of Steam sat forlornly outside for many years at Strasburg. And my father pointed out Carnegie Steel 14 to me early in the 1960's.

Cuban Sugar number 1 and US Navy number 4
Title:  Cuban Sugar number 1 and US Navy number 4
Description:  Cuban Sugar 1, manufactured by Porter as a compressed air locomotive for use in mines or areas where a fire in the firebox would pose a hazard. Cuban Sugar wanted a locomotive that would not cause sugar Cane scraps to ignite. This is the only known standard gage compressed air locomotive in North America. The pressure vessel was charged to 800 PSI, and that gave about 7 operating miles before needing a re-charge. Cuban Sugar ran high pressure pipeline alongside the track so that this locomotive was never far from a recharging point. US Navy 4 in the background was used in the Brooklyn Navy Yard, then spent out the remainder of its operating time at Brooklyn Eastern District Terminal railroad as their number 13

Description:  Porter-built compressed air locomotive Cuban Sugar number 1 operated as a compound locomotive. High pressure steam was first used in the left-side high pressure cylinder before being routed for a second use in the low pressure cylinder on the right side.

Description:  All that's left of Rutland Railroad 0-6-0 steam locomotive 100. It was used to good effect in the shop tour to point out the crown sheet and the staybolts to our tour group. Since it's an ex-Rutland artifact I suspect it got to Age of Steam Roundhouse by way of Steamtown / Bellows Falls.
