Album Info:The Jones & Laughlin narrow gage railroad located at Youngstown Steel Heritage Museum in Youngstown, OH is the brainchild of Rick Rowlands. J&L Steel number 58, a Porter 0-4-0T narrow gage steam locomotive has been restored to operational status and runs on 23“ gage heavy rail installed on the property. Rowlands‘ vision is to extend the track into a loop for continuous running. Youngstown Steel Heritage has also acquired sister locomotives 57 and 60 which are on the property plus a fourth surviving member of the J&L roster, 62 has also been acquired and awaits transport to Youngstown Steel Heritage. These Porter steam locomotives were all used as plant switch engines at Jones & Laughlin Steel in Pittsburgh. They were designed to shove and haul extremely heavy loads so they are heavily ballasted with steel plates. Rowlands describes them as Rolling Ingots. Each 23 inch gage locomotive weighs around 100 tons and all that weight bears on the four drive wheels giving a tractive effort of 16,000 lbs. An amazing and visionary heritage rail preservation!

Newly-acquired J&L Steel steam locomotive 57
Title:  Newly-acquired J&L Steel steam locomotive 57
Description:  Expected to be the second steam locomotive to be restored to operation at Youngstown Steel Heritage Museum. Look at that block of steel sitting between the axles. it's there for ballast and it precludes any sort of inside valve gear, so Porter elected to equip this class of steamer with Walschaert valve gear.
