Album Info:Most, if not all, of the photographs in this album were captured in Northeast Wisconsin in the winter of 2024, so they are mostly CN operating on former C&NW, MILW, and SOO rails, as well as FV&LS operating on former SOO, MILW, C&NW, and GB&W rails. Once in a while I hope to catch ELS and WSOR on former MILW rails too.

CN 9673, CN 9574 and HLCX 3841
Title:  CN 9673, CN 9574 and HLCX 3841
Description:  A CN train passes the FV&LS (or FOXY), former CN, originally C&NW, depot as it prepares to set out cars at Appleton Junction, WI, on 31 Dec. '23. The train continued on to Little Chute and Kaukauna. There used to be a diamond right about where the rear truck of the trailing locomotive rests, from ca. 1874 until at least 1968, where the MLS&W crossed the C&NW. When the MLS&W was absorbed by the C&NW on 1 Sep. 1893, their line became the Ashland Div. of the C&NW. The white building partially visible in the background is the former home of the Harry H. Long Moving and Storage Co., 1001 S. Douglas St. This building dates to at least 1953, when it was listed in the local directory (it was not listed in ’51). The building has a spur, but it hasn’t been used for quite a while (except for occasional MoW equipment). Now called Harry H. Long Moving Storage & Express, Inc., the company, founded in 1917, is still family owned. It moved to a larger facility in Town of Clayton, Winnebago Co., WI in 2001. I thought I left enough room to capture all three locomotives in the scene. I was mistaken.

Title:  CN 9673 and CN 9574
Description:  A CN train is about to clear W. 2nd St. as it sets out cars at the FV&LS (or FOXY), former CN, originally C&NW, yard at Appleton Junction, WI, on 31 Dec. '23. The train continued on to Little Chute and Kaukauna. The former Appleton Wood Products Co. factory, now part of the Miller Electric facility, is partially visible beyond that. Built in 1916, the walls include some nice, decorative brickwork (including cast or carved keystones depicting bowling pins above the windows), which Miller obscured with cheap metal siding at some point after they bought it ca. 1975.

Title:  CN 9673 and CN 9574
Description:  A CN train crosses S. Mason St. while headed northeast via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI, on 31 Dec. '23. Train was headed for Little Chute and Kaukauna. I haven't learned why one side of the bridge is lower than the other, but I have discovered why one side is wider than the other. An old photograph reveals that the left (northbound) lane of S. Mason St. once accommodated a streetcar track and a lane for motor vehicle traffic simultaneously. You can also see that the bridge abutments and piers were designed to support two tracks, but I don't believe this area was ever double-tracked.

Description:  A CN train approaches Towmen Rd. as it transitions from the former SOO rails to the former C&NW rails as it heads northeast at Shawano Junction, Fox Crossing, Winnebago Co., WI (formerly Town of Menasha, Winnebago Co., WI, from 1855 until 14 Apr. 2016) on 10 Feb. '24. This spot used to be named Fox River Junction, after several segments of the original C&NW main line through Menasha and Neenah were removed and a turnout was installed here which allows the bypass of missing C&NW rails by using former SOO rails.

GTW 4907
Title:  GTW 4907
Description:  A CN train approaches N. Lake St. as it heads northwest via former SOO rails at Neenah, WI, on 17 Feb. '24. A KK Integrated Logistics facility, historically Kimberly-Clark’s Lakeview mill, 249 N. Lake St., Neenah, WI (physically located in Fox Crossing, Winnebago Co., WI (formerly Town of Menasha, Winnebago Co., WI, from 1855 until 14 Apr. 2016), looms in the background. KK Integrated Logistics purchased this facility on 12 Jan. '22, after Clearwater Paper Corp. abruptly shut it down in '21. Originally incorporated as Lakeside Paper Co. on 9 Nov. 1910, construction of the mill began in ’11, and paper production commenced on 12 Jun. ‘12. At some point they started to sell a large share of their book paper production to Sears, Roebuck & Co. for their catalogues. The mill was sold and re-incorporated as Lakeview Paper Co. on 9 Aug. ’20. Sears, Roebuck & Co. bought the facility ca. the mid- to late-‘20s. The mill was shut down on 1 Feb. ’29 after a boiler failure and Sears promptly sold it to the Canadian firm of Fraser Paper, Ltd. (which also produced book paper for Sears). Fraser did not hold it long, they sold it to Kimberly-Clark Corp. ca. Mar. ’29. Kimberly-Clark sold the facility to American Tissue Mills ca. Aug. ’96. The mill abruptly shut down on 6 Sep. ’01 due to American Tissue’s significant financial problems. The briefly idled mill was purchased by Cellu Tissue Corp. in ’02 and was renamed Cellu Tissue Corp. - Neenah, commonly shortened to Cellu Tissue - Neenah. Cellu Tissue Corp. was acquired by Clearwater Paper Group in ’10. This huge industrial facility supplied hundreds of jobs for over a century. From now on it might supply a dozen, maybe a few more, if we're lucky. This facility received rail service for 109 years. It will probably never see a freight car again.

GTW 5851
Title:  GTW 5851
Description:  GTW 5851 works the north end of the CN, former SOO, yard at Neenah, WI, on 18 Feb. '24. GDB International, Inc., 218 Jackson St., is partially visible in the background. The facility was previously home to Val-Fab, Inc. This view would have been prevented by the original Neenah Foundry facility, later known as Plant 1, which stood here for over ¾’s of a century. Established in 1872 as Aylward Plow Works (a.k.a. Aylward & Sons) at 120 N. Lake St., they erected a new foundry at 500 W. Winneconne Ave. in 1918 “in a rural area of southwestern Neenah.” The name of Neenah Foundry was adopted in 1922. Expanded numerous times over the years, it became Plant 1 in 1960 when Plant 2 was constructed in the then rural area at the intersection of Byrd Ave. and the aptly named Aylward St. (followed by Plant 3 in 1967). Plant 1 was closed in 1994. It stood abandoned for a while and was eventually demolished.

CN 3970
Title:  CN 3970
Description:  A CN train heads south past the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 18 Feb. '24. Train had two locomotives, CN 3249 pulling and CN 3970 mid-train. In the background, we can see evidence of continued expansion of Galloway Co., 601 S. Commercial St. (an active rail customer).
