CRI&P RS2m 451
Title:  CRI&P RS2m 451
Description:  CRI&P E7 640 and RS2m 451 at Blue Island, Illinois, October 1979, photo by Chuck Zeiler. The E7 was built in February 1948 (c/n 3736) on EMD Order E712. The RS2m was built as an ALco RS2 during September 1948 (c/n 75953), and was sent to EMD in September 1957 for replacement of its Alco Model 244B prime mover with an EMD Model 567C. Although the 567C was capable of producing 1750 horsepower, it was rated at 1500 in this application, likely because of the reuse of the GE Model 752 traction motors. I do not know if the GE GT564C main generator was reused or if EMD's D12B was installed. The locomotive retained its as-built long hood forward configuration after the rebuilding.

CRI&P SW900m 551
Title:  CRI&P SW900m 551
Description:  CRI&P SW900m 551, 47th Street, Chicago, Illinois, March 28, 1965, photo by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was built by EMC during July 1938 (c/n 721) as #523, a Model SW built on EMC Order E205 (an order for ten SW's, #'s 519-528). During April 1957, SW 523 was sent to EMD for rebuilding into SW900m 551 (on EMD Order 7543), rated at 600 horsepower. There was only three inches difference between the SW frame (40'5") and the SW900 production frame (40'8") so likely the frame and cab were reused during rebuilding. I cannot account for the horsepower derating, but perhaps the original GE model 287E traction motors were also reused.

CRI&P E3A 625
Title:  CRI&P E3A 625
Description:  CRI&P E3A 625 at the Rocket House, 47th Street, Chicago, Illinois, June 13, 1965, photo by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was built by EMC in July 1939 (c/n 934) on Order E245A for two E3A's, (625 and 626), both traded to EMD in September 1969. They were built for the Fall 1939 inaguration of the new lightweight Rocky Mountain Rocket, replacing the steam powered Rocky Mountain Limited. The original trainset was a partially articulated Budd built three car trainset pulled by a EMC TA model locomotive, expanded to a seven car Budd-Pullman built mix (November 12, 1939), requiring more horsepower, thus the two E3's. Note the taper at the rear of the carbody to match the roofline of the Budd cars.

Title:  CRI&P E7 641
Description:  CRI&P E7 641 at Roosevelt Road in Chicago, Illinois on an unknown day in July 1978, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. A question came up about those half tube shaped items just in front of and behind the four exhaust stacks of each prime mover. A modeling web site called them exhaust smoke lifters. The same site (address below) says the railroad modified the radiators, explaining the unusual radiator configuration seen here. Anyone know anything about this please leave a comment.

Description:  CRI&P E8 644 at the Rocket House, 47th Street, Chicago, Illinois, September 1979, photo by Chuck Zeiler. By the date of this photo, the Rock Island was all but shut down, one of the unions had walked out on strike for back wages, the suburban service had been taken over by the RTA, the E units were replaced by F40PH's, and the freight service was being operated by the Kansas City Terminal Railway, as directed by the ICC. There is a pipe attached to the steam line on this locomotive, one might speculate that one of the final duties of 644 was as a steam generator at the Rocket House, still used by the RTA to service the new F40PH's.

CRI&P E8 647
Title:  CRI&P E8 647
Description:  Rock Island E8 647 on Train # 8, The Rocky Mountain Rocket, at Joliet, Illinois on July 11, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was built in June 1951 ( c/n 14279 ) on EMD Order 2032A. The semaphore blade is dropping as eastbound The Rocky Mountain Rocket pulls into Joliet, and, if it's on schedule, the time is 7:55 AM CST, or 8:55 AM locally ( Daylight Savings Time ). This train left Colorado Springs AND Denver at 11:30 PM the evening before, joined together at Limon Colorado and became Train # 8 to Chicago. With one of the E8's running in reverse, I'm not sure how they did that. At inception, this train utilized custom-built E6 B-units (classed AB6) with cab controls added, as the trailing power unit, and the train was combined (or split) at Limon, each unit taking a portion of the train from or to either Denver or Colorado Springs. In addition to a sleeping car, diner, and club-lounge, # 8 has reserved seat chair cars, and according to the June 1965 Official Guide, picked up an additional chair car at Rock Island, Illinois.

If it's on schedule, the time is 7:55 AM CST, or 8:55 AM locally ( Daylight Savings Time ). This train left Colorado Springs AND Denver at 11:30 PM the evening before, joined together at Limon Colorado and became Train # 8 to Chicago. With one of the E8's running in reverse, I'm not sure how they did that. Description:  CRI&P E8 649 in the dead line at 47th Street, Chicago, Illinois, May 1979, photo by Chuck Zeiler. Number 649 was built in July 1951 (c/n 14281) on EMD Order 2032A. It is seen here in the dead line just south of the Rocket House at 47th Street. By this date, these locomotives had been replaced by F40PH's and the Rock Island's commuter service was being operated by the Regional Transit Authority which owned the F40PH's, and was in the process of replacing the Rock's 1920's era commuter coaches, in some cases, borrowing equipment from other RTA routes (C&NW and Milwaukee Road bi-level coaches were seen on the Rock Island for a while). Keeping the 649 company is E8 653 and several other unidentified E8's.

Title:  CRI&P E8 651
Description:  CRI&P E8 651, Eola, Illinois, October 11, 1964, photo by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was built in March 1952 (c/n 15198) on EMD Order 2047A. See this address for a full report on this accident: http://railfan44.blogspot.com/2014/01/major-passenger-train-wreck-montgomery.html . Briefly, this was the second of six Rock Island locomotives (656, 651, 633, 750, 638 and 636) in a combined train (#'s 4 and 10) that was re-routed over the CB&Q because of a faulty bridge in the Rock Island's track. It was holding at Montgomery, Illinois, waiting for CB&Q's Train #3 to clear the interlocking, but #3 was routed by mistake into the standing Rock Island train, hitting it at approximately 52 mph, destroying both lead locomotives and killing four people.

Title:  CRI&P E8 655
Description:  CRI&P E8 655, Saint Paul, Minnesota, February 5, 1966, photo by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was built during March 1952 (c/n 15202) on EMD Order 2047A. It is seen here at Saint Paul Union Depot, having cut off its train, the three baggage cars have been removed. I have a shot of this train arriving, and have labeled the slide "Zephyr - Rocket". That being the case, this locomotive brought in the daily Train #15-201-20 from Saint Louis, Missouri. This was a train jointly operated by the Rock Island and the CB&Q between Minneapolis and Saint Louis, with both railroads supplying power and rolling stock. The first run was on January 7, 1941, and it was discontinued on April 8, 1967. The Zephyr - Rocket ran on Rock Island rails between the Twin Cities and Burlington, Iowa (365.6 miles) and on CB&Q rails between Burlington and Saint Louis (221 miles).

Description:  CRI&P E8 655, Saint Paul, Minnesota, February 5, 1966, photo by Chuck Zeiler. This is Train 15-201-20, the Zephyr - Rocket, arriving at Saint Paul Union Depot. The switch tender will line the train for a reverse movement into the stub end depot. This train departed daily from Saint Louis, Missouri, at 5:45 PM CST for an overnight run to the Twin Cities as Train 15 on the CB&Q. Upon arrival at Burlington, Iowa at 11:20 PM, it was turned over to the Rock Island, becoming Train 201. I'm not certain where it became Train 20. According to the June 1965 issue of The Official Guide, it spent about 10 minutes at Manly, Iowa, but that might have been for a crew change. It arrived at Saint Paul at 7:55 AM, if it was on time.

Description:  CRI&P E8 655, 16th Street, Chicago, Illinois, July 1978, photo by Chuck Zeiler. This is the Quad Cities Rocket, the last passenger train on the Rock Island, not counting the suburban commuter trains. It was discontinued December 31, 1978. The first passenger train arrived in the Quad Cities from Chicago on February 22, 1854. Called "The Rock Island Rocket," it was the first train traveling west to ever reach the Mississippi River. The first railroad bridge constructed over the Mississippi River was completed in Rock Island during 1856 allowing for continued rail service to the western United States. The Rock Island provided passenger service to the Quad Cities for nearly 125 years until 1978. The Quad Cities Rocket is seen here crossing the ICG Saint Charles Air Line at about 16th Street in Chicago, ICG's only direct connection to their entire Iowa Division.

Description:  CRI&P E8 655 at Englewood Union Station, Chicago, Illinois, July 1978, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This is the westbound Quad Cities Rocket passing by the Englewood Union Station at 63rd Street in Chicago. By this date no trains stopped at the station, which once saw both the NYC's 20th Century Limited and the PRR's Broadway Limited (among others), in addition to Rock Island's Rockets and the Nickel Plate passenger trains into Chicago. The PRR crossed the Rock Island here (on this date, Conrail tracks), and the NYC left the Rock Island and passed behind the depot. It was possible at one point to see both trains of the NYC and PRR at this depot, and sometimes they would race each other for several miles eastbound after departing this station, which was torn down in 1982.

Title:  CRI&P E8 656
Description:  CRI&P E8 656 at Eola, Illinois on October 11, 1964, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This is the remains of Rock Island's E8 number 656, struck at about 52 mph by CB&Q's Train Number 3 at Montgomery, Illinois on September 27, 1964. The Rock Island train (combined CRI&P Trains 4 and 10, with 656 leading) was detouring over the CB&Q as a result of a bridge problem on their tracks into Chicago, and was waiting for the CB&Q train to clear. A hand written note was attached to the indicator board in the tower at Montgomery advising the operator of an issue with the switch machine and indicator lights, but it was still possible to set up a clear indication of signals, which were (at the time) not interlocked to the switch machine itself. At the time, Montgomery Tower was mechanically-controled interlocking (via pipes) with separate levers for the signal displays. The remains of the accident were shoved into a track at CB&Q's Eola Reclamation Plant for a couple of weeks while the investigation took place.
