Hi hood GP 30
Title:  Hi hood GP 30
Description:  One feature both N&W and Southern shared was ordering their second generation power with short high hoods. On most units, it made for a brick like appearance; on the GP 30's, which both roads rostered, it was really different. Here's a short hood view of one of Southern's units on one of two trains working Greensboro.

SD 35
Title:  SD 35
Description:  A unit that was fairly common, but faded quickly by the early 80's, probably due to its having the 567 engine, was the SD35. Southern used them on its road trains, usually in combination with a pair of SD40's, or in a mix of 40's and 45's. Here we see 3097J as middle uinit of a train making a set out at Pomona yard.

Four axle power
Title:  Four axle power
Description:  Most of the through freights I saw this day had six axle power. One that didn't was this one, which came south with four 4 axle units. Interestingly for you numbercrunchers, the two units to the right had opposing numbers. Note GP 30, number 2625, and ahead of it, GP 35 2526. A GE rounds out the shot.

Big plant
Title:  Big plant
Description:  The Southern local job works the R J Reynolds plant. Back in that era, when a lot more people smoked than now, and tobacco was a primary contributor to the state economy, this was one of the larger industrial facilities, providing many jobs, and a lot of business for the railroad. We see a typical Southern unit working the docks.

Moving up
Title:  Moving up
Description:  A new MP 15 works at Pomona Yard in Greensboro. I had been here a year prior when the power was still NW 2s, so the bigger MP 15s were a step up, though I saw them having wheel slip a couple of times when shoving long cuts into the departure tracks.

Working hard
Title:  Working hard
Description:  New MP 15 2353 pushes hard on a cut of cars being set over for pick up by a later train. The yard was busy enough to keep two switch engines busy all afternoon, and the parade of southbounds was bringing more, even as those trains picked up what the yard jobs had ready.

Hi hood leader
Title:  Hi hood leader
Description:  Not a surprise on the Southern, all of whose road units were high short hood. This was not to house a steam generator, and on some units. Southern thought they offered more protection in case of a collision, though they ran most of their power long hood forward anyway, along with neighbor N&W. Thus it was unusual to see one with the short hood leading, as is the case here. The cab on this unit is also replete with Southern touches. The most noticeable is the computer check letter, in this case the "A" next to the road number. All Southern units had one, to distinguish them in the computer system in place at the time. There was a formula for assigning them, so the system was not random. Also, note the initials below the number. This engine is sublettered for subsidiary Cincinnati, New Orleans and Texas Pacific, which was the owner of the line from Cincy to Atlanta. Other subletterings were for Central of Georgia, Alabama Great Southern, and Georgia Southern and Florida, among others.

Left on the main
Title:  Left on the main
Description:  Two units work their set off into Pomona Yard as their train waits on the main. The Amtrak station at that time was at the yard office, with a small ticket window and waiting room. I got there around 1 PM that day, waiting for the northbound Crescent, which would arrive around 3:30 AM. I had a front row seat for hours of action as trains stopped to make set offs and pick ups, and the yard engines did their thing in between. It was a great place to see the action.

Pulling them out
Title:  Pulling them out
Description:  A power set comes out of the yard with a cut of cars to roll south. Its train is waiting on the main. The two SD 35's were common on road freights at this time, along with either an SD 40 or 45. Most of the trains I saw that day had some combination of SD 35's, 40's, and 45's, typically in three unit sets, almost all of them running long hood forward which was standard Southern practice.

Title:  Thunder in the storm
Description:  A southbound behind a long hood forward SD 45 roll past the yard office in a thunderstorm, making a little thunder of its own as it passes. Hell pull down about 60 carlengths, and the head brakie will pull the cut lever, allowing the cars to be pulled ahead and set off in the yard.

On into the night
Title:  On into the night
Description:  Well after dark, a southbound works the yard. The traffic here was not monumental-no one will confuse this line with the UP in Nebraska-but it was steady. I was there about 15 hours, and saw 15 or so trains. I didnt keep notes in those days(silly me, theyd be really helpful now, 35 years later), so dont have an exact count, but it seemed like there was a train every hour or so.

Unusual power set
Title:  Unusual power set
Description:  In 1984 it was still possible to see some first generation power, even on road trains, though usually mixed in with newer units. Here we have a NW GP9 along with an ex NKP GP30 at State Line tower, still an interesting place to watch trains in that era. Would have loved to see a Monon or EL train through there, but was about 15 years too late.

Title:  Southbound in the rain
Description:  After the NW 611 trip returned to Lexington KY, the skies opened up. I grabbed a shot of this southbound anyway.

Still Southern, mostly
Title:  Still Southern, mostly
Description:  Two years after the NS merger, there was still a lot of predecessor power around. This set was on a train at Danville KY on the Rathole. There's more to it than meets the eye. The leader is obvious, one of the unusual high short hood GP 30's only NW and Southern got; the third unit is ex Central of Georgia and carries its C of G number. The trailing unit is actually at home; it's sublettered for the CNO&TP.

All Southern power
Title:  All Southern power
Description:  This was the last shot on the roll, hence the short frame. An all Southern power set seen at DeButts Yard from an NS 611 fan trip to Chattanooga as the light fades.
