CN 2-6-0 #96 - Canadian National
Title:  CN 2-6-0 #96 - Canadian National
Description:  This 2-6-0 Mogul type steam locomotive is a lucky member of the Age of Steam Roundhouse collection we saw during our tour. The Canadian Locomotive Company built this 2-6-0 Mogul in 1910 originally for the Grand Trunk Rwy as GTR #1024 (serial #937, E-12 class). It was renumbered to 926 and then upon the merger of GTR into the unified Canadian National in 1923, it was renumbered CN #96.

CN 2-6-0 #96 Canadian National
Title:  CN 2-6-0 #96 Canadian National
Description:  After its retirement from Canadian National around 1958, Steamtown's Nelson F. Blount purchased the loco but before the move Streamtown from Bellows Falls, VT to Scranton, PA, the loco was declared excess and sold to a private owner, Horst Muller, in Canada. Not much was done with the loco so eventually Jerry Joe Jacobson was able to purchase it in 1994. It is now a permanent display piece at his roundhouse but with the possibility of being restored to working order.

CN 2-6-0 #96 - Canadian National
Title:  CN 2-6-0 #96 - Canadian National
Description:  Original GTR specs - 63" drivers, modest 170 psi boiler pressure, 21x26" cylinders, modest engine wt of 141,800 lb and modest tractive force of 26,299 lb. The lightweight locomotive could be used on branch lines in Canada where heavier locomotives couldn't service. Now resting quietly in the Age of Steam Roundhouse, the loco can reflect on its service record of 40+ years.

CN 4-6-0 #1551 - Canadian National
Title:  CN 4-6-0 #1551 - Canadian National
Description:  We found out during the tour that upon retirement, the loco was sold to Nelson F. Blount for his Steamtown. In 1986, Jerry Jacobson acquired No. 1551 in trade for his Jackson Iron & Steel 0-6-0 No. 3, which originally had been the shop switcher at the Baldwin Locomotive Works. It was operational on Jacobson's tourist trains starting in 1988. After logging many miles on the OC, No. 1551 was parked in 2003 in need of a number of repairs. Today the “engine that started it all” rests in the Age of Steam Roundhouse, awaiting a trip to the backshop for another overhaul and return to operation.

CN 4-6-0 #1551 - Canadian National
Title:  CN 4-6-0 #1551 - Canadian National
Description:  Original CNRwy specs - 63" drivers, 180 psi boiler pressure (later increased to 200 psi by CN), 22x26" cylinders, engine wt of 173,000 lb and tractive force of 28,063 lb. Unfortunately, I believe this is one of the few locos in the Age of Steam Roundhouse collection that is missing its builder's plate - long gone before it arrived here.
