GTW 4907 and IC 3110
Title:  GTW 4907 and IC 3110
Description:  A CN local crosses W. Prospect Ave./Hwy. BB while picking up a string of cars from the southwest end of the former C&NW yard at Appleton Junction, WI on 14 Aug. '18. When the local reaches the middle of the road, it will be spanning 3 communities at once in a peculiar spot of the sometimes confusing local borders. This section of the road is the border separating the Town of Grand Chute, Outagamie Co., WI to the north (left) and Fox Crossing, Winnebago Co., WI (formerly Town of Menasha, WI until 14 Apr. '16) to the south (right). The locomotives and a couple of freight cars are in the Town of Grand Chute, thanks to an unnatural jog in the border, the remainder of the train is in Appleton. The former SOO main line is just out-of-frame to the left.

Title:  GTW 4907
Description:  A CN local passes Herb and Dolly Smith Park and the shore of Little Lake Butte des Morts and approaches the mouth the Neenah Slough as it heads southeast with at least 7 cars via former SOO rails at Neenah, WI on 12 Dec. '18. Eggers Industries, 164 N. Lake St., an active rail customer, is partially visible in the background. Founded at Neenah, WI, in 1910 as Hardwood Products Co., construction of the facility commenced in Oct. ’10. It was renamed Hardwood Products Corp. as a result of a merger with Mississippi Veneer & Lumber Co. on 20 Apr. ’22 (the latter company was formed by the same businessmen who founded the Neenah company). Eggers Industries acquired Hardwood Products Corp. in 1965 and renamed it Eggers Hardwood Products Corp. Eggers was founded by Fred W. Eggers at Two Rivers, WI in 1884 to make wood baskets used by farmers. They later started making plywood and other wood veneer products. There used to be 3 spurs to service the facility, now there is only 1. The former Lieber Lumber facility is partially visible at left. Part of that facility is used as a warehouse by somebody, the office/retail building is currently home to the Valley Academy for the Arts, 139 N. Lake St.

IC 3107 and GTW 4907
Title:  IC 3107 and GTW 4907
Description:  A CN local crosses W. 2nd St. while setting out a string of cars at the former C&NW yard at Appleton Junction, WI on 15 Dec. '18. Train will soon continue on to Little Chute and Kaukauna. Carter's Caboose, 1428 W. 2nd St., a small, old, rail side tavern, is partially visible beyond the train at left. It dates to at least 1930, when it was a soft drink establishment owned by Hubert J. Merkel and August F. Brandt (Prohibition was still in effect). By ’36 it was a tavern operated by Albert Giesen, owned by Mrs. Gretchen Merkel. By ’38 it was Bob’s Tavern, still owned by Mrs. Merkel. It was the Junction Tavern from at least ’43-’71, still owned by Mrs. Merkel until at least ’60 (there were at least two different owners between ’67-’71). At some point in the ‘70s it became Pete’s Junction (possibly Palomino Pete’s Junction). It was called Netticoat Junction ca. the ‘90s (owned by Joanne M. ‘Nettie’ Nett).

Description:  A CN local passes through the former SOO yard at Menasha, WI on 26 Dec. '18. It's awesome to see a local which consists of all boxcars. The facility at right is currently home to Alliance Industries, 320 Appleton St., they apply powder coatings and manufacture sand cores. Founded at Waupaca, WI in 1979, they leased this facility in 2005. They later purchased the facility as well as the adjacent one at 313 Appleton St. The facility was home to Menasha Mill Supply Co. from at least 1939 through the 1970s, they primarily processed waste paper. It clearly used to receive rail service, but it does not seem to currently. The former MILW yard was located on the other (south) side of it; the building could be serviced by both railroads simultaneously.

Description:  A CN local approaches the Main St. overpass as it traverses the east leg of the wye at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI hours on 15 Apr. '19. The white building partially visible at right is, or was, Progressive Paper Storage, Inc. (formerly Kimberly-Clark Warehouse), 135 Millview Dr. It does not receive rail service, but it looks like there may have been a spur on the northwest side of the building in the past. The north leg of the wye can be seen to the left of the locomotive. Beyond that lies Arrowhead Park, a closed paper sludge landfill. Before the landfill was opened in the '50s, the south shore of Little Lake Butte des Morts came right up to the north leg of the wye. The bulldozer partially visible beyond the Yard Limit sign rests where a large amount of fill is being added to a portion of the park in preparation of pending improvements.

Description:  A CN local parallels Union St. as it crosses over from the yard lead to the passing siding at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 11 Jan. '20. Local was preparing to head for Appleton, Little Chute, and Kaukauna and had two locomotives, GTW 4907 and CN 9530. The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St. used to be the yard. I don't know when the current yard was built, but a map from 1909 shows the yard here. The Winneconne Ave. overpass can be seen in the background at right. The guardrail in the foreground denotes the former Caroline St. grade crossing. The pair of telephone poles toward the right stand at the former Adams St. grade crossing.

GTW 4907 and CN 9530
Title:  GTW 4907 and CN 9530
Description:  A CN local parallels Union St. and approaches the former Sherry St. grade crossing at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 11 Jan. '20. Local was headed for Appleton, Little Chute, and Kaukauna. The historic Neenah Cheese & Cold Storage Co. facility, 434 Sherry St., is partially visible beyond the train. It was built in 1902 after the original 1892 building was destroyed by fire and is currently used for storage. The historic Murer House, 432 Sherry St., is partially visible beyond that. It was built by Felix Murer in 1892 and is currently home to Sherry Town Station. The WC (later SOO) depot stood on the opposite side of Sherry St. from those two buildings; it was built on the north side of Sherry St. on the east side of the tracks in 1891. It replaced the ca. 1871 depot that stood at the west end of Wisconsin Ave. The Sherry St. depot was demolished ca. 1955 when a new depot was built between Main St. and N. Lake St. on the west leg of the wye, about 850 ft. to the northwest. The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St., used to be the yard. I don't know when the current, significantly larger yard (extending southwestward from Winneconne Ave.) was built, but a map from 1909 shows the yard here.

Title:  CN 9530, GTW 4907, CN 4705
Description:  One CN local pauses in front of the depot/yard office as it prepares to set out a string of cars at the former C&NW yard at Appleton Junction, WI on 1 Feb. '20. After finishing here, the local will head for Little Chute and Kaukauna. Meanwhile, another CN local rests behind the depot/yard office as it waits to enter the yard on its way back from Kimberly and Combined Locks via a remnant of the MLS&W main line which once ran from Milwaukee to Ashland. There used to be a diamond right about where the front truck of CN 9530 rests, from ca. 1874 until at least 1968, where the MLS&W crossed the C&NW. When the MLS&W was absorbed by the C&NW on 1 Sep. 1893, their line became the Ashland Div. of the C&NW. The white building behind the depot/yard office is the former home of the Harry H. Long Moving and Storage Co., 1001 S. Douglas St. This building dates to at least 1953, when it was listed in the local directory (it was not listed in ’51). The building has a spur, but it hasn’t been used for quite a while (except for occasional MoW equipment). Now called Harry H. Long Moving Storage & Express, Inc., the company, founded in 1917, is still family owned. It moved to a larger facility in Town of Clayton, Winnebago Co., WI in 2001.

Description:  A CN local crosses the mouth of the Neenah Slough at the south end of Little Lake Butte des Morts as it heads southeast via former SOO rails at Neenah, WI, on 4 Apr. ‘20. This bridge is a popular spot for fishermen, and women, to ply their luck. Eggers Div. of VT Industries, previously Eggers Industries, founded as Hardwood Products Co. in 1910, 164 N. Lake St., an active rail customer, is visible in the background. Clearwater Paper Corp., historically Kimberly-Clark’s Lakeview mill, 249 N. Lake St., Neenah, WI (physically located in Fox Crossing, WI (formerly Town of Menasha, WI, from 1855 until 14 Apr. 2016)), an active rail customer, is partially visible to the right.

Description:  A CN local passes the Main St. overpass at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 26 Apr. '20. Union St. can be seen to the left. The former Sherry St., Caroline St., and Adams St. grade crossings can also be seen. Arrowhead Park and Little Lake Butte des Morts can be seen beyond the Main St. overpass. Adams St. was originally Washington St., until at least 1913. I'm curious to learn what Washington did to incense the "great" City of Neenah. The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St., used to be the yard. I don't know when the current, significantly larger yard (extending southwestward from Winneconne Ave.) was built, but a map from 1909 shows the yard still here.

GTW 4907, CN 2284, CN 2288
Title:  GTW 4907, CN 2284, CN 2288
Description:  A CN local traverses the yard lead as a container train approaches at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 26 Apr.'20. This view would have been prevented by the dominating silhouette of the original Neenah Foundry facility, later known as Plant 1, which stood here for over ¾’s of a century. Established in 1872 as Aylward Plow Works (a.k.a. Aylward & Sons) at 120 N. Lake St., they erected a new foundry at 500 W. Winneconne Ave. in 1918 “in a rural area of southwestern Neenah.” The name of Neenah Foundry was adopted in 1922. Expanded numerous times over the years, it became Plant 1 in 1960 when Plant 2 was constructed in the then rural area at the intersection of Byrd Ave. and the aptly named Aylward St. (followed by Plant 3 in 1967). Plant 1 was closed in 1994. It stood abandoned for a while and was eventually demolished. The tan 4- or 5-story facility in the background to the right is, or was, Kimberly-Clark Corp. (K-C) Neenah Nonwovens Facility, 1111 Henry St. The Neenah Nonwovens Facility was slated to close by 31 May '19. It was purchased by 5K Fibres, based in Greenville, WI, ca. Apr. '20.

Description:  As a CN through freight traverses the west leg of the wye, and a CN work train pauses on the north leg of the wye, a CN local also creeps onto the north leg of the wye at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 9 May '20. On the far side of the train lies Arrowhead Park, a closed paper sludge landfill. Before the landfill was opened in the '50s, the south shore of Little Lake Butte des Morts came right up to the north leg of the wye. A large quantity of fill is being added to the eastern half of the park, in preparation of future improvements. The Fox Valley Energy Center (formerly Minergy Fox Valley Glass Aggregate Plant) dominated the eastern half of the landfill from its opening in Jan. '98 until demolition was completed in the spring of '16. The former C&NW bridge across Little Lake Butte des Morts, now part of the Friendship Trail (often erroneously referred to as the Trestle Trail), can be seen in the background. The Roland Kampo Bridge, a.k.a. the Polish Connection, can be seen beyond that.

Title:  IC 9601, IC 9568
Description:  A pair of CN locals meet along Union St. at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 9 May '20. The historic Neenah Cheese & Cold Storage Co. facility, 434 Sherry St., is partially visible beyond the trains. It was built in 1902 after the original 1892 building was destroyed by fire and is currently used for storage. The Main St. overpass is in the background to the left. The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St., used to be the yard. I don't know when the current, significantly larger yard (extending southwestward from Winneconne Ave.) was built, but a map from 1909 shows the yard still here.

IC 3108 and GTW 4907
Title:  IC 3108 and GTW 4907
Description:  An unusually small CN local pauses in front of the depot/yard office at the former C&NW yard at Appleton Junction, WI, on 7 Jun. '20. There used to be a diamond right about where the rear truck of IC 3108 is, from ca.

Description:  A CN local passes the Winneconne Ave. overpass as it returns to the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 11 Jul. '20. I was standing in the middle of what was once the original Neenah Foundry facility, later known as Plant 1, which stood here for over ¾’s of a century. Plant 1 was closed in 1994, the corporate overlords didn’t want to spend any money to update the plant. It stood abandoned for a while and was eventually demolished. The iconic crossing tower which, until 1991, would have been visible to the right of the locomotive now resides at the Mid-Continent Railway Museum.
