NH FA-1 #0421 - New York, New Haven & Hartford |
Description: |
Great closeup color slide by an unknown photographer of the New York New Haven & Hartford FA-1 #0421 built by Alco in Septermber of 1947. The downhill slide of the New Haven is becoming evident when looking at the condition of this once beautiful loco. The photographer listed this as milepost 0293 - does anyone know if that is accurate for Maybrook, NY? |

Description: |
NH 0421 and three rostermates await their fate back where they were built. Alco RS27 demonstrator no. 640-1 appears to be in the process of being rebuilt as a PRR C424, and two export models (likely WDMs for India) frame the foreground. Gerald H. Landau photo, from the Ralph L. Phillips collection of the Bay State Model Railroad Museum. |

LNE FA-1 #702 - Lehigh & New England |
Description: |
This appears to be a photo taken during the transition between LNE control and its new owner L&N who repainted the unit with solid stripes rather than the 3 pinstripe nose. It still carries the LNE number 702 which will be changed to LN #333 later. No rr name appears on the side. No date, location or photographer was listed on the back of the photo so the date and location are "guess-timations". With Warren Evans help (see comment below), I have reset the date. With Craig Ealey's help, the location has been established as Pen Argyl, PA (see comment below). If anyone has more info on this unit, it would be appreciated. |

L&NE 706 |
Description: |
Another slide I bought from the Houser Collection. L&NE 706 at Pen Argyl 10/1961. Elena M Durant collection. This is one of my favorite Northeastern fallen flag and I was only able to purchase two duplicated slides. Charles Houser Jr used to sell duplicate slides at train shows and I only began to have interest in buying slides when he decided to retire from selling slides at train shows. Thus I only have two L&NE slides, the one at Tamaqua and this one. I am assuming this picture was taken after the L&NE ceased operations and was reconditioning their locomotives for prospective buyers. L&NE 706 was the only locomotive to be painted in this final "cigar band" paint scheme as an active L&NE locomotive. All of the FAs would be painted in this "cigar band" paint scheme before leaving the property for their new owners, the Louisville and Nashville Railroad. The only change was the L&N adding Louisville and Nashville in gold or yellow in the white cigar band. The 706 would be later used as a trade in credit to GE. |

Here is page eight of a 14-page article by Jerry A. Pinkepank entitled "How To Survive In The Diesel Biz: The Story Of Alco ~ The Durable Competitor." It was published originally in the December 1965 issue of "Trains" magazine, page 47. Bottom-Right Photo Caption: "'Built specifically to operate 1 million miles before a major overhaul,' said Alco blurbing postwar 1500 h.p. freight units which incorporated the builder's 244-model V-12." |

The Railroad of Firsts |
Description: |
1952 RR Publication full page advertisement caption included: Through a hundred years of progress the Erie has scored notable “firsts.” It was the first long-distance railroad. First to use telegraph in its operations. First to link the Atlantic seaboard with the Great Lakes. First to transport California fresh fruit to the New York market… and one of the first railroads to engage in major dieselization. Today 172 Alco-GE diesel-electrics – largest fleet of any builder – are helping this great railroad to win traffic back to the rails. |

Shore Line Branch Local |
Description: |
What this image lacks in sharpness it more than makes up for in its subject matter! Gulf Mobile & Ohio FA1 units 735 and 748 were pulling up to the Slidell, Louisiana depot on the "back track" with the southbound Shore Line Branch local. After exchanging paperwork with the operator, the train would back up to North Slidell and then continue on its journey from Bogalusa to Covington and back. Notice the footboards on the 735's pilot to make the unit more suitable for local service. |
