BO 4-6-2 #5320 - Baltimore & Ohio |
Description: |
Beautiful newly built 4-6-2 Pacific stands outside the Baltimore & Ohio Mount Clare shops where it was built in 1928. The class before B&O #5320 was the Presidental P-7 class built by Baldwin in 1927. This was a powerful fleet of 20 passenger engines named after US Presidents in order, beginning with #5300 President Washington. #5320, however, was built by the B&O shops at Mt Clare, Maryland, with some interesting difference such as having Caprotti valve gear and a watertube boiler and classified as the only P9 loco. It carried the name "President Cleveland" to take its place in the Presidental line up. In 1947, it was rebuilt to conform to the others of the P7 class. Unknown photographer - possibly a B&O builder photo. |

Parked next to am iconic water tower is Canadian National 4-6-2 #5601. This loco went through several renumberings during its lifetime. Originally built as Grand Trunk Rwy #201 by the GTR shops in 1910, it was renumbered GTR #291 in 1911, renumbered GTW 5601 in 1923 and finally moved onto the CN roster in November of 1924. (Serial #1501, GTR class P4, CN class K-3-d) The loco was scrapped in November of 1960 after 50 years of service. No date, location or photographer was listed for the photo but Bruce Gemmel found the info. This is a Harold Kinzie photo taken at Durham, Ontario, on July 23, 1955. The engine will take the empty gondolas at far left to a nearby gravel quarry. Many thanks, Bruce, for your help! |

BR1 35006 |
Description: |
Almost 300 steam locomotives were sold to Woodham Brothers, scrap merchants of Barry Island, South Wales in the mid 1960's. Dai Woodham suspended scrapping of locomotives due to the falling price of scrap metal and a legend was born. 213 steam locomoives were saved from this location and many of these have been restored to full working order. Others await the necessary cash. After a long wait, almost 50 years since wihdrawal, 35006 (far right) will return to steam in 2015. |
