These low-floor Tatra T3R.PLFs have been in service for about as long as Ive been in Prague, but until this year they were relatively rare. Now theyre very common, being yet another attempt by DPP to get more out of the old T3 platform even as new Skoda 14t trams are being delivered. The T3Ms are also being upgraded in less radical ways, to the R.3 standard, and many of the RLFs are coupled to them as trailing units. The paint scheme on the RLFs is also unique, other than for the T3R.3s that end up as trailing units, of course. The irony is that its one of the more retro schemes on the system, in spite of the red and cream scheme used on the other T3s dating to the 1910s, long before T3s were even developed! |

Recently, the KT8 fleet underwent a thorough rebuilding programme to equip them with modern computerised destination boards, new seats and wheelchair access, CCTV, dual headlights and other features, with the rebuilt units being designated KT8D5RN2P, as opposed to the original DPP specification of KT8D5. As such, the original D5s have become exceedingly rare, and until I spotted this one in Vitezne Namesti, I thought they had all been retired. Soon after I shot this, I also spotted 9030, which appears to also be unrebuilt, but Im not aware of how many others are left. |

The sweeping curve (by tram standards anyway) gives us the chance to better see an articulated tram in action, in this case a Tatra KT8 from 1987, which is still in service today. The whole KT8 fleet is currently being rebuilt with LED lights, new computerized route displays, CCTV for both greater security and improved driver visibility, and many other modern features that were science fiction in the Communist Czechoslovakia of 1987. #9029 was, however, still unrebuilt and original when I took this. The big number 24 on the roof is actually the route number, rather than the tram number. |
