Title:  CS 2-8-0 ng #58 - Colorado & Southern
Description:  Built by Rhode Island in 1887 as Union Pacific, Denver & Gulf #261, it landed on the Colorado & Southern roster when CS took over the UPDG in 1899. The loco had an unusual modification. A tall pipe led from the rhomboid spark-arresting cap on the stack itself down to the trackbed. It turns out that the stack is a patented apparatus is called the Ridgway Stack. The purpose was to keep any stray cinders from setting fire to the highly combustible right of way. Specs - D-4-c class, 37" drivers, modest 150 psi boiler pressure, 16x18" cylinders, light engine weight of 71,030 lb, small tractive effort of 21,172 lb. All in the class were scrapped in the 1920's except #58 which lasted unti April of 1939. Harold Vollrath photo

Title:  CS 2-8-0n #60 - Colorado & Southern
Description:  This appears to be one of the first photos of Colorado and Southern 2-8-0n #60 after it was put on display in Idaho Springs, CO. It was built by the Rhode Island Locomotive Works in March of 1886 originally as Utah & Northern #263. In September of 1890, it moved over to the Denver, Leadville & Gunnison roster as their #263. Upon retirement in May of 1941, it was put on permanent display in Idaho Springs, CO. Original specs - 3' narrow gauge, 37" drivers, modest 150 psi boiler pressure, 16x18" cylinders, very modest engine weight of 71,030 lb and very modest tractive effort of 15,816 lb. No photographer was listed for the photo.

Description:  With a crooked number plate, narrow gauge 2-8-0 60 sits on display at Idaho Springs during the mid-1950s. It was built by Rhode Island Loco in 1886 as Utah & Northern 263. U&N would become part of the OSL&UN in 1889. 263 would be sold in 1890 to the Denver, Leadville & Gunnison. 263 would pass to C&S in 1899 and become C&S 60. It was donated to the town of Idaho Springs in 1941.

Description:  This narrow gauge 2-8-0 Consolidation, CS #75, was built by the Brooks Locomotive Works in June of 1898 as Colorado & NorthWestern #31. It then went to the Denver, Boulder & Western as their #31. The loco (and its sister 32) were sold to the Morse Brothers Machinery & Supply Co who then sold them to C&S as CS #75. Eventually the loco was sold to Cerro de Pasco Copper Co of Lima, Peru in 1948 and served there unti the mid-1960's. Specs - serial #2969, class B-4-F-pv, Ridgway Stack (long pipe that took the smoke and cinders down to the trackside.). Harold Vollrath photo

Description:  Sad sight to see this 2-8-0 narrow gauge Consolidation sitting in a dead line. Built by the Brooks Locomotive Works in June of 1898 as Denver & Northwestern #32, it bounced through several rosters - Denver, Boulder & Western #32, Morse Brothers Machinery and eventually Colorado & Southern as #76. Description:  Colorado & Southern Railway class B4r 2-8-0 620 at Wellington, Colorado on December 8, 1957, photographer unknown, 3X5 print scanned from Louis Zadnichek collection. Number 630 was built by Alco-Richmond (c/n 25863) in March 1902 as #480, renumbered to 630 in 1906. The original boiler exploded at Bunker Hill, Colorado on August 31, 1912, and a new boiler from Baldwin (BLW #4837) was installed in October 1912. The locomotive was rebuilt in May 1924 and scrapped in July 1961.
