Title:  RDG 2-10-2 #3001 - Reading
Description:  Excellent example of a repurposed older loco, the Reading Shops rebuilt RDG 2-8-8-2 #1801 (serial #44890) into this 2-10-2 Santa Fe type loco in 1927. It lasted until being scrapped in 1954 when diesels arrived. A note on the back of the photo by the photographer states "RDG Co #3001 (2-10-2) class K-1-sa, on coal train on East Penn line, Reading to Allentown, starting up Blandon hill from Reading yard." No photographer was listed but this may be an Alton E. Bowers photo.

Description:  Excellent example of the the re-engineered and rebuilt K1sa class seen here at the Connellsville roundhouse getting an inspection by the yard crew. The Reading shops took ten of the N1sa 2-8-8-2's (#1800-1809) to rebuild as 2-10-2 Santa Fe type locos for freight service between 1927-29. Specs - new class K1sa, 62" drivers, 220 psi, 30.5x32" cylinders, engine weight of 439,900 lb, impressive tractive effort of 89,794 lb. All ten in the class were retired and scrapped in 1954. R.D. Description:  Here is another example of Reading Shops ingenuity when they rebuilt RDG 2-8-8-2 #1803 (serial #45278) into this sleeker 2-10-2 #3008. It lasted until being scrapped in 1954. Description:  Reading 2-10-2 #310 seen here actually started out as RDG 2-8-8-2 #1810 (serial #49487) but was rebuilt by the Reading shops in June of 1930 into the 2-10-2 Santa Fe configuration. The loco lasted on the roster until being scrapped in May of 1954. A note on the back of the photo states RDG Co #3010 (2-10-2) class K-1-sc, Caprotti valve gear, on ash pit at Reading engine terminal." No photographer was listed but this may be an Alton E. Bowers photo

Description:  Built by Baldwin in March of 1931, RDG 2-10-2 #3012 (serial #61618, class K-1-sb) lasted until being scrapped 24 years later in February of 1955. A note on the back of the photo by the photographer states "RDG Co #3012 (2-10-2), class K-1-sb, arriving Allentown with tonnage train, about to cross over to CNJ connection." No photographer was listed but this may be an Alton E. Bowers photo.

Description:  This 1931 Baldwin "Santa Fe" type locomotive built for the Reading was the heaviest type ever made. It was a class K-1sb loco with 61 1/2" drivers and developed a boiler pressure of 225 psi. All were scrapped by 1954. Date is approximate.
