CB&Q E8 9974
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E8 9974 eastbound at Naperville, Illinois on July 10, 1963, photograph by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was built in August 1953 (c/n 18316), became BN 9974 sometime after the merger date (3/2/1970), and was sold for scrap August 12, 1975 to Joseph Simon & Sons, Tacoma, Washington.

Typically, a Dinky (CB&Q term for commuter train) would require a power car to power the lighting in the coaches. As I understand it, some of the CB&Q E8's and E9's were modified to permit the locomotive's auxiliary generator to power the lights in up to two coaches, thus alleviating the need for the power car. The coaches were still (at the time of this photo) heated with steam, and the air conditioning was powered by propane fueled Waukesha engines on each coach.
