CB&Q 4-4-2 Class P-2-C 1586
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 4-4-2 Class P-2-C 1586, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, sometime in 1902, photo by Baldwin Locomotive Works, Chuck Zeiler collection. Baldwin built six Vauclain compound 4-4-2's for the CB&Q during 1902, road numbers 1584-1589. During 1904 they were renumbered to 2510-2515. All were rebuilt between 1915-1917 to class P-5, becoming road numbers 2550-2555. The rebuilt locomotives were single expansion types with new cylinders, new front engine frame, Schmidt-type superheater, new tube sheets and tube arrangement, piston valves actuated by Walschaerts valve gear, and 78 inch driving wheels. The original eight foot long cabs were replaced with the then-standard CB&Q shorter cabs. This particular locomotive, final road number 2552, was retired in June 1942.
