PRR 4616, I-1SA, 1956
#4616 & #4243. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide of a photo by Philip R. Hastings that was taken in Crowl, Pennsylvania, on 14 September 1956. Shown here (R to L) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #4616 and #4243. Both are I-1SA (2-10-0) "Decapods" built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works. #4616 was constructed as an I-1S during September of 1923, rebuilt in Juniata as an I-1SA in February of 1937, and retired in August of 1959. #4243 was built as an I-1S in May of 1923, rebuilt in Juniata as an I-1SA in December of 1943, and retired in March of 1957. They're pulling a 9,000-ton iron-ore train that's stopped in Crowl. Perhaps the crew's having some Maunero's Ice Cream on a steamy September's day! This photo comes from a color slide set entitled "Steam on the Pennsy's Elmira and Shamokin Branches" that's produced and distributed by Blackhawk Films of Davenport, Iowa (785-31).
