PRR 4616, I-1SA, 1956
#4616 & #4243. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide of a photo by Philip R. Hastings that was taken near Shamokin, Pennsylvania, on 14 September 1956. Shown here (R to L) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #4616 and #4243. Both are I-1SA (2-10-0) "Decapods" built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works. #4616 was constructed as an I-1S during September of 1923, rebuilt in Juniata as an I-1SA in February of 1937, and retired in August of 1959. #4243 was built as an I-1S in May of 1923, rebuilt in Juniata as an I-1SA in December of 1943, and retired in March of 1957. They're pulling a 9,000-ton iron-ore train as it approaches the 1.3% upgrade past Shamokin. Note the coast-to-coast tender on the lead engine. This photo comes from a color slide set entitled "Steam on the Pennsy's Elmira and Shamokin Branches" that's produced and distributed by Blackhawk Films of Davenport, Iowa (785-34).
