PRR 5813, BH-50, 1955
BYC. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide of a photo by Fred Kern that was taken just East of the Brick Yard Crossing in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 23 July 1955. Shown here (L to R) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #5813 and another "Centipede" whose number is not recorded. Both are BH-50's built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works and rated at 2,500 horsepower each. #5813 was built in May of 1947 and retired in September of 1962. Given the presence of the N-8 caboose, they are pushing a freight train up the Allegheny Mountains via the Horseshoe Curve to Gallitzin where they will uncouple and return to East Altoona for yet another run up "The Mountain."
