PRR 5814, BH-50, #1 of 2, 1955
BYC. Here is the first of two duplicate 35mm color slides of photos by Fred Kern that were taken just West of the Brick Yard Crossing in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 23 July 1955. Shown here (L to R) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #5814 and #5824. Both are BH-50's built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works as BP-60's rated at 3,000 horsepower each, but later regeared and classified as BH-50's rated at 2,500 horsepower each. #5814 was constructed in September of 1947 and retired in April of 1962, while #5824 was built in May of 1947 and retired in April of 1962. In this context, they're serving as "pushers" on a mixed-cargo freight train heading up the Allegheny Mountains via the Horseshoe Curve to Gallitzin, where they'll uncouple and return to East Altoona for yet another helper/pusher run up "The Mountain."
