PRR 4480, I-1SA, 1940
Here is a photo by H.W. Pontin via Rail Photo Service that was taken at the Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, in July of 1940. Prominent here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #4480, an I-1SA (2-10-0) "Decapod" built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works during May of 1923, rebuilt in Juniata as an I-1SA in March of 1944, and retired in March of 1950 after 27 years of faithful service. In this context, it's rounding the Curve with a mixed-cargo freight train on its way down the Allegheny Mountains to Altoona and points East. John S. Fisher Collection; #12 of 14.
