UP 4-12-2 #9000
Monstrous looking Union Pacific 4-12-2 #9000 sits in front of the Cheyenne, WY, coaling tower. Built by Alco-Brooks in March of 1926, the 4-12-2 wheel configuration is labeled the "Union Pacific" type in honor of the UP request for it. Eighty eight were built by Alco - Brooks and Schenectady specifically. They were three-cylinder locomotives with the third cylinder located in the center of the steam chest. The third cylinder drove an eccentric in the axel of the second pair of drivers. Donated in May of 1956, the only surviving UP 4-12-2 "Union Pacific" type locomotive is number 9000 on display at the Los Angeles County Fairplex in Pomona, CA. An unidentified photographer took this b&w photo.
