PRR 8664, AS-18AM, 1959
Volkmer. Here is an image of a photo by William D. Volkmer that was taken in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 18 May 1959. Shown here just West of the 24th Street Bridge (R to L) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #8664, #8658, and #8670. All are AS-18AM's built by the American Locomotive Company in 1958 and rated at 1,800 horsepower each. #8664 was constructed in February, #8658 was built in January, while #8670 was fabricated in March. In this context, they're serving as tail-end pushers for a mixed-cargo freight train on its way up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin, where the pushers will be uncoupled and returned to East Altoona for yet another helper/pusher run up "The Mountain."
