"New Device Levels Mountains," Page 4, 1956
Here is page one of a two-page article entitled "New Device 'Levels' Mountains." It was published originally in the September 1956 issue of "Pennsy" magazine, page 4. Top Photo Caption: "Freight train unequipped with Pressure Maintaining Valve comes down mountain with brake shoes smoking in winter test." Shown here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #9573, a BF-15 built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in March of 1949, rated at 1,500 horsepower, and retired in December of 1963 after just 14 years of revenue service. In this context, it's heading a mixed-cargo freight train around the Horseshoe Curve and down the Allegheny Mountains to Altoona and points East.
