Long Island RR New EMU Design
This is an artist rendering for press release October 17, 1968 concerning the new Long Island commuter EMU's being built by the Budd Co. The press release from the Cleveland GE office (J.L. Moline) reads "The Long Island Rail Raod will take on a new look when the first of 270 electric, air-conditioned cars like these will be delivered during the Fall of 1968. Propulsion and automatic speed regulation systems supplied by General Electric will play a major role in maintaining a high level of passenger comfort and efficiency on the high-speed commuter cars. The addition of these sleek, stainless-steel, 100-mph cars to the nation's most heavily traveled commuter line will mark a new level of service for Long Island commuters, according to officials of the Metropolitan Commuter Trasnportation Authority of New York, operators of the Long Island Rail Road. The cars are being built by The Budd Co." J.L. Moline

Tom Beckett General I remmeber when these cars were delivered. As I recall, the original deployment was 620 cars, numbered 9001-9620, odd cars facing west, even east. LIRR also took an option for 150 additional cars, numbered up through 9770. Delivery of the entire fleet took til 1972, at which time all the non M-1 MU cars were retired, except for the MP 72's, most of which were converted to diesel hauled equipment, which then bumped some of the oddball hand me down cars from that fleet. Steam heated cars would run on the diesel trains til the GP 38's arrived in 1976, when all the steam heated cars were retired at the time the C 420's, which had steam generators, were traded, LIRR keeping 222-229, which mostly worked in freight service til their retirement in the early 90's. This drawing looks like the train is on the Main Line between Harold and Woodside. The highway beneath is artistic license. THe L 12/4/2022 4:49:10 AM
