Long before an RSC2 loco wore the number #578, this Baldwin 2-8-2 Mikado type steam locomotive did. Now it sits in the dead/scrap line at the Bensenville Yard awaiting the dreaded scrapper's torch. Built in January of 1921, it was originally MILW 8278 but was renumbered in June of 1938 to MILW #578. The loco served the Milwaukee Road for nearly 33 years before being retired in April of 1954. Specs - 63" drivers, 200 psi boiler pressure, 26x30" cylinders, engine wt of 287,600 lb, tractive effort of 54,723 lb. No photographer was listed for the photo. |
