Title:  3985 reborn
Description:  UP Challenger 3985 was on static display at Cheyenne, WY for many years. Then some employees got the notion it might run again. Here, in September of 1979, a burro crane has laid panels to the Challenger, the fence has been removed and geep 327 shepherds the locomotive, with prodigious oiling of valve and driving gear, west to Tower "A" for a reverse move back towards the roundhouse where the capable steam crew will embark upon the process of readying the sleek beauty for many years of excursion service.

Description:  Carrying a full load of coal for the days trip to Ogden, the crew of Union Pacific 4-6-6-4 3985 is making sure everything is ready to go before they fead out of Salt Lake Citys engine facility on June 27, 1982. The numerous lineside fires started dy this engine on this weekend prompted the UP to convert the Challenger to oil firing.

Description:  On the second day of excursions with Union Pacific 4-6-6-4 3985, the big Challenger envelops its train with coal smoke (yes, it was still coal fired at this time) as it passes the USN Geneva Work steel plant in Vineyard, Utah, on June 27th, 1982. The excursions, one on the 26th and another on the 27th, operated from Salt Lake City to Provo and return. The steel mill is now gone, and the main#line has been downgraded to a branch line.
