Project 39 trip
Title:  Project 39 trip
Description:  A fantrip tobenefit Project 39 ran on June 7 1986, a woefully rainy day in the New York area. Here the train approaches Jamaica to pick up its riders for the trip out to Greenport behind a pair of C 420s with F unit 619. At the time, there were still eight C 420's left, all from the 1968 order. These had hi ad trucks, unlike the first order from 1963. Interestingly, this was not even close to a farewell. These units would carry on into the 1990's before being retired. Note the PRR style dwarf signals, as well as the "hanger" on the platform canopy.

Title:  Great day for a fantrip
Description:  The Project 39 group ran a fantrip to benefit their restoration of LIRR 4-6-0 39, selecting a June Saturday for the trip. It poured, all day. Going back to the train
Title:  Going back to the train
Description:  RF 64 has run as far east as its going to on the Port Jeff branch today, and is now running around its train to start back as RF 65. That train more often got a pair of MP 15s, but occasionally would get a pair of Alcos. Im not complaining about the substitution.

Sign of days gone by
Title:  Sign of days gone by
Description:  The building behind RF 63 is the Long Island Potato Exchange, once a huge deal on the Island. As late as the 1950s, solid trains of potatoes would be sent west from Riverhead. Better roads and higher real estate values meant fewer potatoes, and most of them now go by truck. Imagine three or four C 420s and 90 cars of potatoes-what a sight!!

Description:  The remaining 8 C 420s that had been working in freight service on the LIRR sit outside the Morris Park shops after being pulled from service following the opening of the Ronkonkoma electrification.
