Title:  AMTK 2890
Description:  Amtrak sleeper 2890 was on the northbound CRESCENT leaving New Orleans shortly after the train received HERITAGE FLEET equipment. This 10 compartment-6 double bedroom car was built in 1950 as Union Pacific PACIFIC UNION and was numbered 1446 when Pullman went out of the sleeping car business in 1969. It became Amtrak 2637, then HERITAGE FLEET car 2890, and then privately-owned car 800640 which was based in the New Orleans area for many years.

Title:  AMTK 2911 PACIFIC FOREST
Description:  HEP 10-roomette/6-double bedroom sleeper PACIFIC FOREST was on the PANAMA LIMITED at New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal. The Plan 9522 car was built in February 1950 for the Union Pacific, and was later numbered 1415. Its first Amtrak number was 2611, and it was renumbered 2911 when it was modified for head-end power (HEP) operation in 1977. When this photo was taken, the PANAMA had just become an HEP train.

Title:  AMTK 2986 PINE MESA
Description:  HEP 10-roomette/6-double bedroom sleeper PINE MESA was on the northbound CRESCENT at Meridian, Mississippi. The Plan 9521 car was built in February 1950 for the Santa Fe, and was later numbered ATSF 1637. Its first Amtrak number was 2726, and it was renumbered 2896 when it was modified for head-end power (HEP) operation.

Description:  Lounge car 3102 began life as U.S. Army hospital car 89507, built by the St. Louis Car Co. in 1954. It was rebuilt by Amtrak as lounge car 3401, and then renumbered 3102 when upgraded to head-end power. The car was photographed at New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal.

Title:  AMTK 3203 CRYSTAL STREAM
Description:  CRYSTAL STREAM was a Plan 9505 6-double-bedroom/buffet/lounge built by Budd in March 1949 for the New York Central, one of eleven such cars in Lot. No. 9663. First numbered NYC 10620-10630, ten of them went into the Penn Central 4411-4423 series, and nine of these became AMTK 3200-3208. CRYSTAL STREAM was NYC 10625, then NYC 661 for use as a parlor car, and then PC 4414. The car was photographed on the PANAMA LIMITED at New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal.

Title:  AMTK 3253 CITY OF CLEVELAND
Description:  CITY OF CLEVELAND was a Plan 4169 5-double-bedroom/cafe/lounge built by Pullman-Standard in May 1950 for the Nickel Plate Road, one of two such cars in Lot. No. 6867. The car also included a room for its 2-man crew. These cars were built for service on trains 5 and 6, the NICKEL PLATE LIMITED, between Buffalo and Chicago. The train carried a diner-lounge east of Cleveland, but west of there the café in these cars provided light meals for Pullman passengers. This car was number 150 on both the NKP and the N&W, and was photographed on the PANAMA LIMITED at New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal.

Description:  WINGATE BROOK was a Plan 9508 5-double-bedroom/buffet/lounge observation car built by Budd in July 1949 for the New York Central, one of three such cars in Lot. No. 9636 built for service on the SOUTHWESTERN LIMITED. This car was originally NYC 10632 and then NYC 10632 in 1958. It was photographed leaving New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal on the westbound SUNSET LIMITED, substituting for one of the former CALIFORNIA ZEPHYR dome-observation cars which were usually assigned to the train between October 1976 and February 1977.

Description:  3800 was built by Budd in 1940 as Seaboard Air Line 6500, one of three blunt-end observation cars (6500-6502) with 30 coach seats, a mid-car stewardess room and buffet, and a 24-seat lounge for service on the expanded SILVER METEOR. The cars initially ran in the middle of the train between New York and Wildwood, and then on the rear of the Miami section after the Tampa and Miami sections were split at Wildwood; but were soon transferred to the Tampa section with a proper round-end observation going to Miami. It was renumbered 5800 after the formation of the Seaboard Coats Line on 1 July 1967. The line number 5814 shows that the car will be used on train No. 58, the northbound PANAMA LIMITED.

Description:  This coach-lounge looks like a Southern Railway car, except for the white number on a blue background. The car was built by Budd in 1949 as Southern 950 and was assigned an Amtrak number when that carrier began operating the CRESCENT on 1 February 1979, just ten days before this photo was taken. The car was on the northbound train at Meridian. It was eventually sold to Via Rail Canada and extensively rebuilt into coach 4110.

Title:  AMTK 3920 SILVER PARLOR
Description:  Snack bar-coach 3920 SILVER PARLOR was built by Budd in 1949 as Burlington 340. It was one of two cars (340, 341) built for the TWIN ZEPHYR with 30 parlor seats and a 5-seat drawing room. Both were remodeled in 1968 with a snack bar and 44 coach seats, and redone again by Amtrak in 1971 with a snack bar and 52 coach seats. In 1984 SILVER PARLOR was remodeled once again as HEP cafeteria car 8704 for the AUTO-TRAIN. The car was photographed leaving New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal on the northbound PANAMA LIMITED.

All of the cars went to Amtrak as 4568-4582, and all of them were upgraded into Heritage Fleet cars numbered between 4600 and 4626. The 4569 was photographed on the PANAMA LIMITED, and became the 4626 in 1979 before being sold to Ringling Brothers in 1994 as RBBX 43002.

Forty-two of these went to Amtrak as the 4810-4828 and 4850-4872; and forty of these were upgraded into Heritage Fleet cars 4700-4739, but not in numerical order. The 4860 became the 4721 in 1980 and was remodeled into 88-seat coach 7628 in 1983. It was photographed on the SUNSET LIMITED, which was using conventional coaches instead of the usual Hi-Level cars on this trip.

The 4871 was built by Budd in 1953 as Santa Fe 2859, one of 45 cars (2816-2860) in Lot. No. 9613, and was unusal in that it still had its skirting. Forty-two of these went to Amtrak as the 4810-4828 and 4850-4872; and forty of these were upgraded into Heritage Fleet cars 4700-4739, but not in numerical order. The 4871 became the 4703 in 1980 and was rebuilt into baggage car 1708 in 1997.

The 4892 was previously NP 583 and was photographed on the northbound PANAMA LIMITED.

Description:  Fifty-seat coach 5011 was manufactured by Budd in 1952 as Burlington 4732 SILVER SHIELD. It was one of four such cars (4731-4734) built for service on the KANSAS CITY ZEPHYR and the AMERICAN ROYAL ZEPHYR, and all of these went to Amtrak as the 5010-5013. The 5011 was photographed on the northbound PANAMA LIMITED leaving New Orleans. In 1985 it was remodeled into Heritage Fleet cafeteria car 8710.

Title:  AMTK 5436
Description:  Fifty-four seat coach 5436 was manufactured by Budd in 1946 as Pennsylvania Railroad 4056, and retained the same number on the Penn Central. It was one of 27 cars built for New York-Florida service on Atlantic Coast Line trains: nine ACL (216-220, 224-227), six RF&P (801-806) and 12 PRR (4046-4057). All but one of the cars (PRR/PC 4054) went to Amtrak as the 5408-5416 and 5420-5436. The 5436 was photographed on the northbound PANAMA LIMITED.

Title:  AMTK 5618
Description:  Fifty-six seat coach 5618 was manufactured by Budd in November 1940 as Seaboard Air Line 6210, and was subsequently Seaboard Coast Line 5618. It was one of seven such cars (6208-6214) built in Lot No. 96512 for service on the expanded SILVER METEOR. These became SCL 5616-5622 and retained the same numbers as Amtrak cars. It was photographed on the northbound PANAMA LIMITED.

Description:  Fifty-six seat coach 5680 was built manufactured by Budd as New York Central 2931, and it retained the same number on the Penn Central. It was one of 60 cars (NYC 2900-2959) built in 1946-47, and 52 of them went to Amtrak as the 5630-5635 and 5640-5685. It was photographed on the SOUTHERN CRESCENT leaving New Orleans.

Title:  AMTK 6055
Description:  Amtrak 60-seat coach 6055 was built by ACF Industries in 1955 as Louisville & Nashville 3259. It was one of 13 cars (3253-3265) in Lot No. 04-4403, and 11 of these (3254-3264) went to Amtrak as the 6050-6060. The car was photographed at New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal, laying over between runs on the PANAMA LIMITED.

AMTK 6061
Title:  AMTK 6061
Description:  Sixty-seat-coach 6061 was manufactured by the St. Louis Car Co. as Union Pacific 44-seat coach 5493, one of 20 cars (5488-5507) built between February and September 1960 in SLC Lot No. 1807. Three of the cars became Great Northern 1008-1010 in 1969, and then Amtrak 4550-4552. Fourteen other went directly to Amtrak and were assigned numbers 4554-4567. This car was originally assigned Amtrak number 4556, but it was remodeled with 60 seats and became the 6061 instead. In 1973-74 Amtrak increased the capacity on about 20 coaches to 60 seats, but this one was the only one for this group that was altered. The 6061 car was sold to Ringling Brothers and became RBBX 43001, but 12 of the cars in the 4550-4567 series were upgraded into 4600-series Heritage Fleet coaches. Photographed on the PANAMA LIMITED.

AMTK 6433
Title:  AMTK 6433
Description:  Sixty-four-seat coach 6433 was built in 1946 as New York Central 3057 and was subsequently Penn Central 3625. It was one of 153 cars (3000-3152) built in Pullman-Standard Lot 6721. Over time, all of the cars were renumbered at least once and many of them were remodeled, although the 6433 retained its original configuration. Seventy-seven of these cars went to Amtrak as the 3949-3970, 6094-6098 and 6400-6449. The 6433 was photographed in storage at New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal.

Title:  AMTK 7254
Description:  Seventy-two-seat coach 7254 was built by Pullman-Standard in 1948 as New Haven 36-seat parlor car 311 PROVIDENCE. It was one of 25 Plan W6788 cars (300-324) in Lot No. W46611. Ten of the cars were remodeled into 72-seat coaches 7200-7209 in 1964, losing their names, and were subsequently Penn Central 3190-3199. The 3191 was wrecked in 1971, but the other nine cars became Amtrak 7251-7259. The 7254 was previously PC 3194 and NH 7204, and was photographed on the PANAMA LIMITED.

Description:  Forty-eight-seat dining car 8019 was originally Seaboard Air Line 6114 and then Seaboard Coast Line 5919, and was one of nine cars (6106-6114) built under Budd Lot. No. 9624-009 in June 1947. The cars became SCL 5911-5919 and them Amtrak 8011-8019. The 8019 was photographed on the PANAMA LIMITED, and was sold in 1983.

Description:  Forty-four-seat dining car 8029 was originally New York Central 694 and then Penn Central 4545. It was one of 12 such diners (447-449, 691-699) completed in November and December 1947; and was the only one of the group that was acquired by Amtrak, as the other 11 cars were all retired between 1965 and 1969. The 8029 was photographed on the PANAMA LIMITED and was retired in 1976.

Description:  Thirty-six-seat diner 8034 was originally Santa Fe 1483, one of ten cars (1475-1484) completed under Budd Lot No. 976 in May 1937. Half of the cars were retired between 1968 and 1970, while the other half became Amtrak 8030-8034 in 1971. Amtrak remodeled this car with 46 seats. This was one of very few pre-WWII cars initially purchased by Amtrak, and was acquired because the Santa Fe wanted to sell all of its lightweight cars as a package deal. The 8034 was photographed on the SUNSET LIMITED, and was sold in 1981.

These were some of the last passenger cars built after the War Production Board ended the construction of new passenger cars during WWII. The outside-swing-hanger-trucks were a post-war modification. This was one of very few pre-WWII cars initially purchased by Amtrak, and was acquired because the Santa Fe wanted to sell all of its lightweight cars as a package deal. The 8039 was photographed on the SUNSET LIMITED, and was sold in 1981.

Description:  Forty-eight-seat dining car 8060 was originally Southern Pacific 10210, and was one of six diners (10210-10215) built by Budd in 1950 for the SUNSET LIMITED. The Espee retained the 10214 as company service car 290, but the other five went to Amtrak as the 8060-8064. The car was photographed leaving New Orleans on the northbound PANAMA LIMTED. It was subsequently upgraded into Heritage Fleet diner 8526 in 1981 and modified into diner-grill 8559 in 1986.

AMTK 8082 <I><B>LA GRANGE</I></B>
Title:  AMTK 8082 LA GRANGE
Description:  Thirty-six-seat dining car 8082 was built for the Atlantic Coast Line in 1950 as the LA GRANGE and was later Seaboard Coast Line 5952. Thirteen of these diners were built by Pullman-Standard in Lot 6808: 10 for the ACL, two for the Florida East Coast and one for the Richmond, Fredericksburg & Potomac. One of the ACL cars was wrecked in 1959, and the RF&P car went to Mexico; but the remaining ACL cars and the FEC cars became AMTK 8080-8088 and 8090-8091. The 8082 was photographed on the PANAMA LIMITED at New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal, and retired in 1977.

Description:  Counter-diner 8103 was originally Santa Fe 1558, one of 16 cars (1550-1565) built by Budd in 1948 with a 14-seat lunch counter and 20 dining seats. Half of the cars were retired in 1969, while the other eight became Amtrak 8100-8107. The 8103 was photographed on the rear of the westbound SUNSET, where it was either dead-heading west or was serving as an extra food service car behind five sleepers; and was remodeled into Heritage Fleet lounge 3112 in 1981.

AMTK 8116
Title:  AMTK 8116
Description:  Dormitory/counter/diner 8116 was originally Santa Fe 1575, one of 12 cars (1566-1577) built by Pullman-Standard between June and August 1950 with a 13-seat lunch counter and 20 dining seats. In 1954 nine of the cars (1569-1577) were remodeled with the addition of a crew dormitory area, which reduced the dining area to just eight seats. The unmodified cars were retired in 1968, but the other cars became Amtrak 8110-8118. The 8116 was photographed on the PANAMA LIMITED and was retired in 1977.
