Extra Board. Here is a newspaper clipping entitled "Coal Consumption Affecting Climate." It was published originally in the 14 August 1912 issue of "The Rodnen & Otamatea Times" out of Warkworth, North Island, New Zealand. Partial Quotes: "The furnaces of the world are now burning about 2,000,000,000 tons of coal a year.... The effect may be considerable in a few years." How about in just one century? Don't say we didn't know in time and so couldn't do anything about climate change!

PRR Machine ID Badge, c. 1929
Description:
Extra Board. Here is a scan of Pennsylvania Railroad machine identification badge #14280. This brass badge was affixed to a bearing polisher utilized in the PRR's Altoona Shops. The machine was later purchased by the Berwind-White Coal Mining Company and moved to its Car Shops in Hollidaysburg ~ where I "secured" it. (#11,100)

"General Motors Futurama," 1939
Description:
Extra Board. Here is a scan of a photo entitled "General Motors Futurama." It was published in Robert Mojtowicz's 1998 book entitled "Sidewalk Critic: Lewis Mumford's Writings On New York." Depicted here is the facade of the General Motors "Futurama" pavilion. Parked in front of it are two of GM's new E-3A diesel-electric locomotives built for passenger service. The trail unit appears to have had its side panels removed so as to reveal its innards to folks attending the 1939 World's Fair in New York.

Extra Board. Here is a photo that was published originally in Dan Cupper's 1996 monograph entitled "The Pennsylvania Railroad: Its Place In History 1846-1996," page 15. The photographer is not identified. Partial Caption: "On February 19, 1949, mail train No. 11 rear-ended standing M1a-class steam engine No. 6737 and a cabin car near Burgettstown, Pa., on the Pittsburgh-St. Louis main line." Shown here (L to R) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #6737 and #5841. #6737 is an M-1A (4-8-2) "Mountain" built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works during June of 1930 and retired in August of 1955. #5841 is an EP-20 built by GM-EMD in August of 1947, rated at 2,000 horsepower, and renumbered "4241" in 1966.

Description:
Extra Board. Here is a clipping entitled "Rail Midget and Giant" that compares mine with mainline motive power. It was published originally in a 1952 issue of "Popular Mechanics," page 126. The "Midget" in the foreground is a battery-powered mine shifter built by General Electric. The "Giant" in the background is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #4941, an E-2B electric constructed by GE in June of 1951, rated at 2,500 horsepower, and retired in June of 1965 after just 14 years of experimental service.

Extra Board. Here is an image that was taken near Columbus, Ohio, following a head-on collision during 1959. Prominent here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #9820, along with three other units whose numbers are not recorded. All were built by GM-EMD. #9820 is an EF-15A built in May of 1951 and rated at 1,500 horsepower; it was later repaired and survived into the Penn Central era as number "1520." The photographer's name, the exact date, and the location are not recorded.

PRR 1126, Observation Car, 1962
Description:
Extra Board. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide by an unidentified photographer taken in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania, on 8 April 1962. Shown here is Pennsylvania Railroad Observation Car #1126. It is the last car of a "Railfan Special to the Horseshoe Curve," sponsored by the Philadelphia Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society. According to Mr. James C. Smith Jr., "The 1126 is a one-of-a-kind car, built as the observation for Pennsy's pre-war, all coach South Wind. It has an Obs end that is more round than tapered, but not as round as Santa Fe and Reading Budd obs cars. The windows are also taller than the standard used on other full-sized Budd cars, and I'd bet this was the first stainless steel train to have its exterior painted. The South Wind was one of three Chicago-Miami trains that covered the route, each leaving the opposing terminal every third day. The others were IC's City of Miami, which used IC's Central Station, and the C&EI's Dixie Flagler, which left from Dearborn, while the PRR train used Union. The three trains followed different routings between Chicago and Jacksonville, but all three used the FEC, onward to Miami."

PRR 9th Street Gate in Altoona, 1965
Description:
Extra Board. Here is an original photo that I took of Pennsylvania Railroad property in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 10 July 1965. Shown here is the 9th Street Gate on 9th Avenue; it's one of the gates to the 12th Street Shops. Now largely disused and weed grown, this place ~ and 9th Avenue generally ~ was one of the busiest and most important places in Altoona. Once upon a time, the PRR's mainline and passenger station were located on 9th Avenue. After the Horseshoe Curve was completed in 1857 and the mainline was redirected up the mountains from here, 9th Avenue fronted the PRR's Altoona Machine Shops where they built everthing from steam locomotives and tenders to freight cars. There were three locomotive roundhouses located on these grounds at one time. Now, there's only weeds, memories, and ghosts.

"Juniata Valley," 1940
Description:
Extra Board. Here is a portion of a map copyrighted in 1940 by Mr. Floyd G. Hoenstine of Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania, and published in his book entitled "Blair County's First Hundred Years: 1836-1936." It depicts clearly a portion of the Juniata River proper and its two main branches. The route of the Pennsylvania Canal was defined by the Juniata River proper and its West Branch, while the route of the Pennsylvania Railroad was defined by the Juniata River proper and its North Branch. The West Branch is often called the "Frankstown Branch": it reaches as far as Claysburg, grows bigger near Frankstown, snakes along the Juniata River Valley to Water Street, and merges eventually with the Juniata's North Branch near Alexandria. The North Branch is often called the "Little Juniata": it reaches as far as Juniata Gap, passes under the Pennsylvania Railroad's yards in East Altoona, then its down the valley to Tyrone, thence on to Spruce Creek, and merges eventually with the Juniata's West Branch near Alexandria. Mr. Hoenstine also notes the location of various Forts that were constructed in the region during Colonial times. (#1,734)

Juniata Headwaters, 1966
Description:
Extra Board. Here is an original photo that I took at the Altoona Campus of the Pennsylvania State University during May of 1966. Shown here is a portion of the stream that flows through the Campus. This stream ~ which flows down Juniata Gap ~ is actually the headwaters of the North Branch of the Juniata River. By-and-by, it passes under the Pennsylvania Railroad's yards in East Altoona, then it's down the valley to Tyrone, thence on to Spruce Creek, and merges eventually with the Juniata's West Branch near Alexandria. In due course, the Juniata proper slips into the Susquehanna River near Duncannon, the Susquehanna flows into Chesapeake Bay near Havre de Grace, and the Bay finally merges with the Atlantic Ocean near Norfolk.

Railroad Bridge in South Viet Nam, 1970
Description:
Extra Board. Here is an original photo that I took while serving with the U.S. Army in South Viet Nam during November of 1970. Shown here is a small bridge on the single-tracked railroad line that connects Saigon with Da Nang. The bridge is located about 30 miles south of Bong Son on Highway 1, which parallels the rail line for 600 miles between Saigon (to the left) and Da Nang (to the right). Beyond the bridge are numerous rice paddies. The Sui Cai Mountains dominate the distance.

Extra Board. Here is an original photo that I took while serving with the U.S. Army in the Republic of South Viet Nam during February of 1971. Shown here is all that remains of a steam locomotive that was sabotaged in the war between the French and the Viet Minh (circa 1951): one section of boiler and two pairs of driving wheels! They're located about 20 miles south of Bong Son on Highway 1, which parallels the rail line for 600 miles between Saigon (to the left) and Da Nang (to the right).

Extra Board. Here is an original photo that I took at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC, in December of 1971. Shown here is the Camden & Amboy's "John Bull." This is the original 2-4-0 wood-burning steam locomotive that was built in England around 1830, disassembled and sent across the Atlantic Ocean on a wood-hulled ship with sails, and then reassembled for revenue service in New Jersey.

Extra Board. Here is a postal card entitled "Bicentennial 1976." No Postmark. Caption On Reverse: "Delaware & Hudson Bicentennial RS3u #1976 leads four more RS3u's at Central Bridge, NY, on March 20, 1976. Photo by George Barker." #1976 was built by the American Locomotive Company as RS3 number "4112" in September of 1952, rated at 1,600 horsepower, rebuilt as an RS3u and renumbered "506," later repainted and renumbered "1976" in preparation for the US Bicentennial Celebration on July 4th, 1976. Also visible is D&H RS3u #505. Gift from TRP Publications of Hanover, Pennsylvania.

Extra Board. Here is an original 35mm color slide by Mr. H.E. Brouse that was taken near Cammal, Pennsylvania, on 1 March 1981. Prominent here (L to R) are Conrail engines #6176 and an unidentified GE-built "U-Boat" whose road number is not recorded. #6176 is an SD45 built by GM-EMD for the Pennsylvania Railroad in December of 1967, rated at 3,600 horsepower, then absorbed in turn by the Penn Central Railroad and Conrail. This is an interesting action shot, but it's a really wonderful view of wintertime mountains and rivers in Pennsylvania! (The slide mount is annotated "N/B ENSY1.")

Extra Board. Here is an item entitled "Pennsy's Public Eye" that was published originally in the Spring 2002 issue of "Keystone" magazine, page 62. Partial Caption: "Two close-ups of one of the ragged and frayed rail joints, with its supporting tie of weatherbeaten stone on the stretch of old Camden & South Amboy Railroad track.... The wrought iron plate on which these rails originally rested have disappeared, but the stone ties, made by convicts in Sing Sing Prison, New York, still remain."
