PRR 4315, I-1SA, 1957
Decapod #4315. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide of a photo by Philip R. Hastings that was taken near Troy, Pennsylvania, on 5 May 1957. Shown here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #4315, an I-1SA (2-10-0) "Decapod" built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works as an I-1S during December of 1922, rebuilt in Juniata as an I-1SA in July of 1941, and retired in October of 1959 after 37 years of faithful service. It's pulling a southbound mixed-cargo freight train as it travels North of Troy. Also note the coast-to-coast tender and the "doghouse." This photo comes from a color slide set entitled "Steam on the Pennsy's Elmira and Shamokin Branches" that's produced and distributed by Blackhawk Films of Davenport, Iowa (785-6).

Tom Beckett General Great stuff. Looks like the shot was taken from adjacent PA 14, which runs south out of NY state-it's NY 14 there-from Elmira and Geneva. When I moved from the area ten years ago, you could still readily find much of the right of way here along PA 14, though between Troy and Canton you had to go back on a side road for a distance through Minnequa to follow it. I used to picture scenes like this in my mind as I drove along the empty right of way, now abandoned over 40 years. Seeing this is better than I could have imagined. 8/15/2016 3:29:09 AM
