PRR 8607, APS-24MS, 1960
Sweetland. Here is duplicate 35mm color slide of a photo by David R. Sweetland that was taken near Gallitzin, Pennsylvania, in October of 1960. Shown here (R to L) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #8607 and #8609. Both are APS-24MS's built by the American Locomotive Company and rated at 2,400 horsepower each. #8607 was built in December of 1955 while #8609 was built in January of 1956. In this context, they're serving as "pusher" locomotives for a mail-express train that's passing through the Gallitzin Tunnel; in a matter of minutes, though, they'll uncouple and return to Altoona for yet another helper/pusher run up "The Mountain."
