This is an album for/of various photographs that I took in and about my hometown of Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania, during the days of the Pennsylvania Railroad. Also included are some images by other photographers depicting the action during the Penn Central Railroad, Conrail, WATCO, and GMTX eras.

Everyday. Here is an original photo that I took of Pennsylvania Railroad real estate in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania, during March of 1960. Shown here is the yellow "ABL" sign about half-way between WYE Tower and the Passenger Station. The acronym "ABL" means Approach Block Limit. Also visible is a long string of retired box cars that are on their way to the PRR's Reclamation Plant in Frankstown. Once upon a time, there were four tracks here! In this photo, the tracks occupy the original right-of-way for the Allegheny Portage Railroad between Duncansville (to the rear) and Hollidaysburg.

Shown here is the "W" ~ for whistle ~ sign just to the West of the Jackson Street crossing. Also visible are gondolas parked at the Sender's Junk Yard siding. The two tracks on the left occupy the original right-of-way for the Allegheny Portage Railroad between Duncansville (to the rear) and Hollidaysburg. Broad Street/US Route 22 is visible at the far left.

Shown here is the PRR's free-standing telephone box marking the limit of HOLLY Block. Once upon a time, HOLLY Tower was located at the very same spot ~ just to the east of the Juniata River Bridge, Bedford Street, and the Passenger Station.

Shown here is PRR engine #8973, a BS-16M built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1951 and rated at 1,600 horsepower. Its crew is pulling a string of cars over the Juniata River Railroad Bridge and into the Hollidaysburg Yard. Photo taken just East of the Bedford Street Crossing and the Hollidaysburg Passenger Station. Note that one of the crew members is making a call at the HOLLY phone box at the far end of the Bridge.

Everyday. Here is an original photo that I took of Pennsylvania Railroad property in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania, on 02 August 1960. At the far right is the Bedford-Cumberland Branch Line, which now serves as the Everett Railroad's right-of-way. In the center are the tracks of the eastbound receiving yard, often filled with freight cars marshalled for reconditioning at the PRR's Samuel Rea Shop. Visible in the center distance are the old wooden water tower (the last vestage of the Steam Age in Hollidaysburg) and the western end of the Samuel Rea Shop. This photo was taken from the southern end of the Union Street Bridge.

Everyday. Here is an original photo that I took of Pennsylvania Railroad locomotives in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania, on 02 August 1960. Shown here (L to R) are PRR engines #9394 and #9172. Both were built by EMD. #9394 is an ES-12 built in 1950 and rated at 1,200 horsepower. #9172 is an ES-10 built in 1948 and rated at 1,000 horsepower. Both of these locomotives are just idiling-away in the summer sun. Visible in the background are the old wooden water tower (the last vestage of the Steam Age in Hollidaysburg) and the western end of the PRR's Samuel Rea Shop. Queen Anne's lace rules the foreground! This photo was taken near the Yard Master's Office, at the very eastern end of South Juniata Street.

This photo was taken near the Yard Master's Office, at the very eastern end of South Juniata Street. Note the string of just-reconditioned, double-door automobile-carrier cars visible on the right.

Both are AS-18AM's built by the American Locomotive Company in 1958 and rated at 1,800 horsepower each. Originating in East Altoona, they have travelled to the Wye Switches in Duncansville and are now backing into the Hollidaysburg Yards ~ where they will pick-up a train of new hopper cars (produced by the PRR's Samuel Rea Shop), and pull them up the New Portage Branch via the Muleshoe Curve to Gallitzin and points West. Everyday. Here is an original photo that I took of Pennsylvania Railroad rolling stock in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania, on 28 September 1963. Shown here is PRR #470008, an F-29 heavy-duty flat car. It is sitting near the Yard Master's office, at the very eastern end of South Juniata Street. Also partially visible are the ancient Water Tower (last vestage of the "Age of Steam") and two Diesel switchers: #9131 and #8100. Both switchers were built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works. #9131 is a BS-10A built in 1948 and rated at 1,000 horsepower. #8100 is a BS-12 built in 1954 and rated at 1,200 horsepower. Hollidaysburg's famous "Chimney Rocks" are also visible in the distance!

They have just passed through the Jones Street crossing on their way to East Altoona after pulling a 75-car mixed-cargo freight train into the Hollidaysburg Yards. The caboose was #477966. Partially visible on the left is a Maintenance-of-Way building.

Everyday. Here is an original photo that I took of Pennsylvania Railroad trains in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania, on 07 April 1965. Shown here (R to L) are PRR engines #9777 and three others whose numbers are not visible. #9777 is an EF-15A built by EMD in 1951 and rated at 1,500 horsepower. Its crew is climbing aboard, and will soon head out of the Hollidaysburg Yards with a 38-car freight train and caboose #477806. They will pass WYE Tower, climb the Allegheny Mountains by way of the New Portage Branch and the Muleshoe Curve, and then merge with the mainline at Gallitzin. Most of the cars in this train are new 70-ton hopper cars, just produced at the Samuel Rea Shop in Hollidaysburg. The PRR Shop Car in the foreground is used to transport newly-finished wheels-and-axles from the Altoona Shops to the Samuel Rea Shop. The Trailer Train autocarrier on the left is on its way for repairs at the Berwind-White Car Shops.
