PRR DR-4-4-1500 9570
Description:
PRR DR-4-4-1500 9570 across from EMD at La Grange, Illinois on November 15, 1964, photo by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was built in March 1949 (c/n 73701), one of 34 DR-4-4-1500 "Sharknose" A units numbered in the 9568A - 9593A and 9700A - 9707A number series. Previous to the PRR order, Baldwin's DR-4-4-1500 was delivered in the "baby face" carbody style. The PRR's initial order of 26 A-units and 26 B-units were delivered in 1949, and a follow-up order for eight A-B sets was placed in 1949 for 1950 delivery. These last eight units introduced yet another refinement; the cab was moved one foot forward, with a corresponding reduction in the length of the nose. Number 9570 is seen here on its last mile, on the Pielet Brothers setout track across the IHB main from EMD's plant in La Grange.

Wye Switches. Here is an original photo that I took of a Pennsylvania Railroad train at the Wye Switches in Duncansville, Pennsylvania, on 1 August 1962. Shown here (L to R) are engines #9574 and #2008. Both were built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works. #9574 is a BF-15 built in March of 1949, rated at 1,500 horsepower, and retired in December of 1963. #2008 is a BF-16 built in October of 1951, rated at 1,600 horsepower, and retired in July of 1966. These two Baldwin "Sharks" and N-5 cabin car # 477719 have just come from East Altoona. They are about to cross US Route 22, after which they will stop and back into the Hollidaysburg Yards, pick-up a freight train, and then head up the New Portage Branch to Gallitzin and points West.

Good Day. Here is an original photo that I took of Pennsylvania Railroad property in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania, on 25 July 1960. Shown here (R to L) are PRR engines #9581, #9589-B, and #9706. All were built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works and are rated at 1,500 horsepower each. #9581 and 9589-B are BF-15's built in 1949, but #9706 is a BF-15A built in 1950. These locomotives are in the process of backing-up to couple onto the train they will pull up the New Portage Branch Line via the Muleshoe Curve. This photo was taken near the Yard Master's Office, at the very eastern end of South Juniata Street. The PRR's Samuel Rea Shop is in the background. Also visible are the wooden water tower (the last vestige of the "Age of Steam"), as well as several all-steel passenger cars on their way to be scrapped at the PRR's Reclamation Plant in Frankstown. #6 of 12.

Volkmer. Here is an image of a photo by William D. Volkmer that was taken in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 23 March 1959. Shown here about to pass under the 24th Street Bridge (R to L) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #9722 and #9592. #9722 is a BF-16 built by Baldwin-Lima-Hamilton in March of 1951, rated at 1,600 horsepower, and retired in July of 1966. #9592 is a BF-15 constructed by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in July of 1949, rated at 1,500 horsepower, and retired in June of 1964. In this context, this A-A set is powering a fully-loaded mineral train down the Allegheny Mountains on its way to the Eastbound Receiving Yards in Altoona. Brush Mountain dominates the distance. 8th Street. Here is an original photo that I took of a Pennsylvania Railroad train in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 12 January 1964. Shown here (R to L) are PRR engines #9700, #2014-B, #9700-B, and #2012. All were built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works. #9700 is a BF-15A built in 1950 and rated at 1,500 horsepower. #2014-B is BF-16 built in 1952 and rated at 1,600 horsepower. #9700-B is a BF-15A built in 1950 and rated at 1,500 horsepower. #2012 is BF-16 built in 1952 and rated at 1,600 horsepower. They are about to pass under the 8th Street Bridge in Juniata with a 100-car coal train destined for Enola and points East. Visible in the immediate background are at least eight cabin cars and PRR engine #7923, an ES-12 built by EMD in 1957 and rated at 1,200 horsepower. Several ALCo road switchers are on the move and will soon pass the Juniata E&M Shop on the far right.
